SANFORD, Fla. - Federal prosecutors and the FBI have opened an investigation into the killing of an unarmed teen by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford.

The death drew protesters Monday to the courthouse in Seminole County, north of Orlando, to demand justice for Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was shot and killed last month while walking back to his father's fiancee's house in Sanford.

The African-American teen's parents said Monday that they believed race was a factor in their son's death, and the Congressional Black Caucus had called for a federal investigation, saying local police have shown "blatant disregard for justice."

Late Monday, the Justice Department said it would dispatch officials to Sanford to investigate and "to address tension in the community."

"The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all of the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation," Justice Department spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa said in a written statement. "The department also is providing assistance to and cooperating with the state officials in their investigation into the incident."

Oh. I guess that means Holder is going to order the BATFE to have straw buyers acquire guns illegally with so-called "stimulus" money and send them into the neighborhood the way he did in Mexico.

Also, let us not dismiss the fact that 911 told Zimmerman to Not pursue the young man. He had not committed any crime. He did not have a weapon. You cannot pursue someone and then claim self defense. I am a gun owner. I would never pursue someone in my home illegally and shoot him. You cannot do that in Texas and I doubt Fla is any different. My husband knew the homeowner here who did pursue the burglar and shot him. He was shocked he knew no better. Even with the Castle Doctrine, you are not allowed to do that.

The Feds got involved because of the “interstate conspiracy to commit murder” and “interstate domestic violence” charges that they eventually convicted Jose Luis Del Toro. They are not supposed to be involved in strictly local cases unless requested by the investigating agency.

lol. You cant help me. This is true. I am laughing at me, not you. I do want to say I speak from some experience. Not really applicable here but, about 20 years ago I was alone in the middle of the day. My husband was at work. I heard someone jump our privacy fence. In a short time. I heard the patio door open and a hand parted the verticle blinds. There, crouched down, was a man. By that time, I had a .44 magnum pointed at him. I said, I suggest you not come in here. He froze. At that time, I started calling my husband’s name, even tho he was not there, I wanted him to think a man was in the house. (As tho a woman holding a .44 was not scary enough.)...He ran. Jumped the fence. He was gone. I called the police. Never did it enter my mind to pursue him or shoot him. At that time, tho it did not enter into my decision, we did not have the Castle Doctrine in Texas. It was pure instinct. There was no reason to shoot him. Had he continued to enter the house, yes. I would have shot him because I would know he had seen me, seen the gun. And yet he was entering anyway wishing me nothing but harm. Was I wrong? In your opinion?

Sorry to butt in but you have a .44 mag for self defense? I mean as someone once said “sometimes it’s entirely reasonable to use a sledgehammer to kill a fly”. But dang! A .44? Have you ever shot it? If not, let me tell you the 1st thing that is gonna happen. You’re going to go deaf. And after you get your hearing back, if you do, your ears are gonna ring for the next few mo’s or so. That’s if you are in an enclosed area. If outside, near deafness and ringing of ears for a shorter time.

I think someones been watching too many Clint Eastwood movies.

How about a nice little .38 or maybe a shotgun?

“If the girlfriend who was on the phone with Martin is to be believed”

I won't believe a word she says without corroborating evidence. I've seen too many black “witnesses” lie to protect a black perp simply because he was black.

With all due respect, that information is not complete:

Sure, the teen was 6’3” tall. For some reason, his height is being used as some kind of evidence here. But, did you also know that, at 6’3”, he weighed only 140 lbs.? His nickname was Slimm, and Zimmerman outweighed him by 100 pounds:
http://www.wtsp.com/news/topstories/article/246108/250/Teens-death-renews-debate-over-Stand-Your-Ground

Btw, I think this is the teen’s Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/people/Trayvon-Slimm-Martin/1353307542

Secondly, he was not almost 18. He was born in 1995; he’d just turned 17. I have a son almost the same age; I have to ask him to reach things for me, but height doesn’t mean they are grown men at that age. It also doesn’t mean they’re streetwise.

Thirdly, he was reportedly on a five-day suspension from school for lateness (hardly a serious offense):
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/os-trayvon-martin-shooting-tension-20120317,0,4288837,full.story

At this point, he’s hardly coming across like a gangsta-wannabe. Zimmerman is the one coming across as a wannabe-a-cop.

I don’t believe Zimmerman committed premeditated murder. My speculation is that both Zimmerman and Martin were suspicious of each other. Martin might’ve believed he was being followed by a gangbanger. Even if we give Zimmerman the benefit of the doubt: Suppose Martin did come at him when he got out of his vehicle. Well, Martin had been trying to get away from him. Now, suddenly, this man who’d been following him is out of his vehicle and coming toward him. Maybe Martin was “standing his ground” and acting in self-defense. Zimmerman is a young man in his 20’s, but maybe out-of-shape physically.

Whatever the case, the family is right in demanding further investigation, charges... a trial.

I will say one thing that’s been bothering me, though: With a son the same age, I can’t understand why the father didn’t go looking for his son when he didn’t return home right away. Why didn’t he notice something happening just 70 feet from the house where he was staying? I read somewhere that he called police the next morning. (I don’t know where I read that now.) Why not call that night? And why didn’t the girl on the phone call the parents to tell them something had happened? Maybe I’m just a very protective parent, but there are lots of unanswered questions in this story.

Thank you so much. I actually read the book about that case and yet I had no memory of why the feds took over that case.I thank you for renewing my memory. My mind was so blank. (And that is familiar territory for me.) You are kind and I appreciate that.

You asked a valid question. And now, I Do have a .38. Yes, I have shot the .44. It ends up somewhere behind my head. It is my husband’s gun and it was the quickest to get at that particular time. It is way too much gun for me. And again, your question is valid.

And...a shotgun? Still too much gun for me. I have a 44/40 Winchester saddle rifle that was my grandmother’s. Way too much gun but makes a wonderful sound as you rack one into the chamber. I want a 9 millimeter glock. What do you think?

There was no physical fight. The witnesses all said the boy was lying on his back calling for help.

If you say so? Were you at the scene and did you observe all the events? No, you are just repeating what the trouble makers are saying. Mr. Zimmerman, if attacked by a person who has the abilty, opportunity and places his life jeopardy as the right to use deadly force under the “Castle Doctrine.”

Clearly the race-hustling opportunists have jumped on this one. They have no interest in improving race relations, race hustling is their money train.
