Newton Gingrich proposed Puerto Rican statehood about 1997.

I love the continued viewpoint that Romney's better than Obama - a half glass is better than an empty glass.. No, it isn't. Because the only half of the glass we'll get is the liberal one operating under the cover of being a Republican flying the banner of bipartisanship.

Mitt, the people of Puerto Rico have voted down statehood and independence multiple times. Seriously, you have to be an absolute moron to attach yourself to the issue - the only reason why there are still jobs on the island is that any items made there, as a US territory, can carry the ‘made in the USA’ label.

They don't want the whole disaster that is federal government of today - they don't want every profitable business on the island to be sued out of existence for non-compliance with ADA regulations. They don't want to deal with the massive paperwork of the EPA. They don't want to have to deal with USDA food inspectors shutting down every meat processor on the island, the federal labor board, the FCC, the elections board, the Department of Education... None of it.

And least of all, some gringo who decides to pop on in and attach himself to a whole lot of people they respect waving the statehood flag. Quite possibly, by that act alone, Mitt's already converted thousands of Puerto Ricans to the Democrat party.

Why does the issue of Puerto Rico becoming a state keep coming up? Why does it come up for Puerto Rico, but never for other American possessions, such as the Virgin Islands, Guam, or American Samoa? What is so special about Puerto Rico that some want it to be a state, rather than remaining a commonwealth?

Pandering, stupid pandering. The PR is already a money sink for US taxpayer dollars. Federal benefits, welfare, SSI, SSDI and SS are the main forms of income down there. Plus, even the industries are there due to federal tax gimmicks. Not to mention the crime is all over and tourists are often ripped off or assaulted.

Make it a state and you get all the problems, plus with two senators and one or two representatives in Congress, the PR and suck our tax dollars even more. Yes, they already vote Democrat in local elections.

Romney, please slip and fall off a cliff.

Note to clueless Romney: Puerto Rico doesn’t want to become a state. Now, they get the goodies without having to give much in return.

When will this idiot become informed on the issues? Looking like a Ken Doll and really, really wanting to live in the White House just isn’t enough.

“PR don’t want to no stinking state.”

That is true. They don’t want to be no stink’in state. And I don’t blame them.

But these asshole crooked politicians never did any research on the subject.

I think los Puerto Riceños need to pass a law that everyone needs to learn to speak Mandarin or Cantonese as a second language. The hell with English on any level.

That should shut up all these crooked politicians.

P.S.

I just talked to a Panamanian friend this a.m. Apparently all of Panama is in an uproar laughing.

I proposed to her the idea Puerto Riceños should learn a Chinese language instead. She couldn’t stop laughing.

It will be difficult for PR to become a state since the number of Congressional members is fixed at 435. PR would be entitled to 7 - 8 congressional members. Which states would lose delegates? Should the number be increased? Maybe we should have the number of Representatives the founder intended and increase to 30,000....
