PRINCETON, NJ -- Republican voters who prefer Newt Gingrich for the party's 2012 presidential nomination are as likely to name Mitt Romney as their second choice as they are to name Rick Santorum, suggesting the race would not tilt in Santorum's favor if Gingrich dropped out.

It’s a mistake to write off Newt!
Movin’ on up - again!
Not to mention, what if Santorum does a Howard Dean? Then what its Romney all the way?

All I get from it, are all sorts of personal attacks and innuendo about how Santorum will easily win without Newt in the picture. Which is not at all true.
Time to break out the good stuff. This could get interesting...

Hard to believe but I guess some view Newt/Mitt as having stronger resumes, rather than voting on ideology. I know when I bought into the Gingrich bandwagon a lot was based on his “gravitas” as former Speaker.
So when Newt bows out, half of you will become Romneybots. I see.
EXTREEM SARCASM!!!
I don’t know where you have been the last month, but obviously, it does not include paying attention.
Romney has better than an 80% chance of winning, and considering the remaining states and Romney’s overall poll numbers, it is almost a conclusion.
Our best chance is to force a Brokered Convention, and the only way for that to happen, is to keep Newt in the race, to deny Romney as many delegates as possible.
Well played. :)
ABMR>ABRS -> poll may lead to false conclusions
Thank God none of Santorum’s worshipers are into VOO DOO! We would really be hurting right now!
So half of Newt’s votes would go to Mitt if Newt dropped out.
Hey Newt, please stay in the game!
You didn’t have show us a picture of you in your Halloween costume to make that point, did you?
No, that’s not what it means. This was not a poll of FR Newt supporters, it was a poll of the general population of Newt supporters.
And yes, intelligence, accomplishment, resume are more important than ideology for many voters and those folks would, out of this entire field, normally pick Newt first and probably Romney second. They would have also been perhaps enamored of Cain (business) or Perry (governor).
They would not have had any interest in Santorum or Paul or Bachmann or Huntsman.
Again, this is about the “non FR” universe, which some here, sadly, fail to remember does exist.
Right, but any similar poll favoring your hero, are all spot-on legitimate, credible, peachy keen.......We see it every day here.
Reminds me of my trip to the bombed out Ba'ath Party House. My supervisor was from New Orleans and absolutely refused to go in the room where a couple hundred bodies were just concreted over. Said spirits were there.
