PRINCETON, NJ -- A little more than one-third of Republicans say they would vote "enthusiastically" for either Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum if either candidate were to win their party's nomination for president. Slightly fewer say they would vote enthusiastically for Newt Gingrich. This level of enthusiasm is similar to Republicans' feelings about voting for Romney in early 2008, but lower than the enthusiasm level for that year's eventual GOP nominee, John McCain.

These data are from a Gallup poll conducted March 8-11, 2012. The 35% of Republicans who at this point say they would vote "enthusiastically" for Mitt Romney for president if he were to win the GOP nomination is identical to the 35% of Republicans who said the same about Romney back in late January/early February 2008.
In that same 2008 poll, however, 47% of Republicans said they would vote enthusiastically for John McCain, who ended up as that year's GOP nominee. In short, Romney's enthusiasm deficit in 2008 has carried over to his current campaign, with the difference being that none of the other nominees this year are generating any more enthusiasm among Republicans than Romney.
Republicans are also less enthusiastic about voting for their party's current pool of candidates than Democrats were about voting for their potential nominees in both 2008 and in 2004. More than half of Democrats in 2008 said they would vote "enthusiastically" for Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton if either were to win

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted March 8-11, 2012, with a random sample of 457 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
For results based on the total sample of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±6 percentage points.
Interviews are conducted with respondents on landline telephones and cellular phones, with interviews conducted in Spanish for respondents who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Each sample includes a minimum quota of 400 cell phone respondents and 600 landline respondents per 1,000 national adults, with additional minimum quotas among landline respondents by region. Landline telephone numbers are chosen at random among listed telephone numbers. Cell phone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods. Landline respondents are chosen at random within each household on the basis of which member had the most recent birthday.
Samples are weighted by gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, adults in the household, and phone status (cell phone only/landline only/both, cell phone mostly, and having an unlisted landline number). Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2011 Current Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older non-institutionalized population living in U.S. telephone households. All reported margins of sampling error include the computed design effects for weighting and sample design.
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
In light of how uninspiring a candidate McCain was, this is saying something.

Well, we know what happened with McCain, thus our lack of enthusiasm. On the other hand, there aren’t too many Republicans who will miss an opportunity to vote AGAINST B.O. And unless the economy really takes off, Independents are likely going to go against him this time, too.

This is a flawed comparison. You cannot compare a field of three with a field of two. I can’t see where the pool of GOP voters changed that much in 4 years. Add the Rick and Newt enthusiasm i.e.; the Conservatives, and you get 62%. How does that compare to McLames 47% in a two man race? I also note that Milt is flat over ‘08. That there is the real take away from this poll. All that money and running for President for the past 5 years has given Milt nothing to show for it.

As we see in the forum every day, conservatives are divided between Gingrich and Santorum, and many of them seem to feel obliged to attack the other of these two, to get him out of the race. If you add up the conservative vote, it’s roughly 2/3 in most of the primaries so far.
McCain had only Romney to worry about.
Furthermore, I think conservatives are a lot less willing now than they were then to vote for the “lesser of two evils.” We’ve seen what that means, far too often.

That’s why I say I’d vote for the contents of my septic system over zer0. I can truthfully say that the contents of my septic system are LESS FOS (with some air at the top) than zer0 is, who is COMPLETE FULL to the top FOS.
The missing elephant in the story is Palin - without her, there would have been no excitement for "I'm with you my friend" McCain.
Yeah, there is a reason for that I think. The mood of the country is much darker now. Three and a half years of Obama has depressed Republicans and Democrats and Independents alike. He inspires NO ONE. So others seem a bit depressing.
As for me, I am so damn ready to fire Obama, I’ll gladly vote for Newt or Mitt or Rick or even Ron Paul. Obama is the worst, and I think none of those guys is worse.
And look at Newt’s— pretty good for America being told over and over - deliberate misinformation- about the Speaker- like that he is too much of an insider, too old, now in the crazy man stage as in one never knows what he will say or do- and doesn’t look like to have any chance even after his SC win, they reported this—or what about angry, to he’s so bitter- And how he left his wives while one wife is dying as Newt-making a scene by as the wife for him to not leave her, as she is dying in the hospital (all lies, NBC) His former wife is well and has a productive relationship with Newt and their 2 children (daughters) today. Proves evil is among us, doesn’t it..
I believe the media have played up the 2 weakest guys. They play the public like a fiddle. The public rarely outsmarts the media because too many of us are comfortable with things as they are. I think that we are going to lose because there’s a deeper resentment towards Romney than it was for McCain. ( I think some is of Mitt’s religion-yes, I do, I said it) I keep talking to people who are saying they don’t care any longer. Most of those can’t understand why people are not supporting Newt. They feel the country is already lost and we need a tragic awakening to get a chance for bringing America back (so the lemmings and liberals can grow up to be an adult).
We keep our action groups motivated though some are becoming very troubled in believing change will not be allowed to come. One cannot give up, we must fight on.
Newt needs to stay in all of the way to the convention. He needs to keep talking about his reform policies; to keep positive against all of the media attacks. Be presidential, a statesman as even CNN refers to Newt from time to time. Don’t give up knowing that you are smarter than the others and so desire to get in to work on improving things, Newt.- Keep the faith to all- God has a plan and that is for Newt to be at Tampa. Keep supporting Newt. He said that things would have low peaks and that the media will do anything to discredit him. Newt is our only hope. If he steps down, those other 2 will not get my help. I know this an important election cycle. We need another person in front. Newt Gingrich can bring the enthusiasm up with his IDEAS of Bold reforms.
We are in a stage to save our country; not just to get someone in who can be close to what we have now- i.e. banking corruption to the Wall Street companies, crony capitalism and the media manipulating the citizens. It is time to break up that corruption like Breitbart talked of doing. Break the media strangle hold and fight for a real change. Things have to get bad before a change comes-nothing comes easy when you are in a battle of which way you will allow your country to be. A foreign land or America, the beautiful. This is time to rebel, not go along. Don’t lose your convictions by just going along. And don’t allow this negative input that you read: to change your focus.
Mr. Speaker, keep going. American needs you. They need a person who understands what America is and what she is supposed to be. Thank you for standing up when you could have stayed home and watched the decay from the sidelines. God Bless you. Your supporters admire you and of the hope that you give to us.
