The United States encountered mounting challenges to its presence in Afghanistan Thursday, as Afghan President Hamid Karzai urged the U.S. to pull back to military bases and the Taliban announced they were suspending tentative peace talks.
The developments come after two incidents strained relations between the two countries -- the inadvertent burning of Korans on a U.S. base, and most recently a shooting spree that left 16 Afghan civilians dead. Afghan lawmakers expressed outrage after the U.S. soldier suspected in that massacre was flown out of the country to Kuwait.

Tell you what Karzy baby, we’re going to pull back all the way back to the US....lotsa luck.
Leading from behind.
I agree with Karzai. However, these bases should all be in the USA.
I hear them C-17s can land on a dirt road. What the US should do is coordinate a massive Dunkirk-like Exodus. EVERY helicopter, C-17, C130 and other similar troop transport aircraft in the world converging on Afghanistan and removing all of our soldiers.
Orbiting high up is a B-2 or two or three loaded to the gills with nuclear ALCMs waiting for the all clear sign.
It's the only way to be sure.
Funny how the American media never mention our own American troops who were treacherously killed by crazed Muslims. Or the fact that those Korans were already defaced by Muslim terrorists. It’s as if that never happened. No, it’s all our fault, and only our fault. Fox News is as bad as the rest, with a few exceptions.
KUWAIT?!? He's not safe in any Muslim country. He needs to be flown back to the US ASAP.
I bet he won’t last as long as Soviet puppets did if the US to get back home.
Oh boy. Vietnam again.
We should pull them all out NOW. Let’s see if Karzai is even alive in 2 weeks! What a waste of American lives this last couple of years on Afghanistan has been!
Personnally, I think the biggest mistake we made in Afghanistan under President Bush was to allow Afghan sovereignty. Until the Taliban was comepletely destroyed and gone, we should never have allowed an “Afghan government.” We definitly should not have allowed Karzai to be the leader. We conquered that country out of the national security needs of our own. We didn’t do it for gain, but security. However, we always fail to call what we did what it is. We conquered a “government” that was hostile to us and actively harbored those that harmed us on 911.
IF we leave there now, we will cause more rogue groups to go after us because we are perceived as weak. We have to be ready to do what is not a desireable thing. We have to go on an offensive posture in Afghanistan and make it clear that WE are in charge not Karzai and we WILL use all force necessary to supress insurrection.(this is fantasy of course - we don’t have the will to do this - even absent Mr. Obama)
Of course the rogue soldier that killed civilians MUST be tried by us quickly, but it MUST in accordance with American Military Law.
Everyone should read about the British retreat from Kabul in 1842.
That guy has cross hairs on the back of his neck. I wonder what he’s thinking.
This is going to turn into a mad rush for the exits. Who wants to be the last allied soldier killed in toiletstan?
Instead of having our armed troops sealing the eastern border of Afghanistan we should withdraw them and have our armed troops seal the southern border of the United States. Everybody wins!
Is Karzai still guarded by Americans? If so, first US troops withdrawn should be his security detail.
All the way back to the USA seems fine to me.
Yeah, so they can become mortar fodder.
How about we pull back to Kuwait and then to the USA.
