Once again, Americans are waking up to headlines about multiple primary-night victories for Rick Santorum over the man who is still widely considered to be the most likely Republican nominee this year, Mitt Romney.
But Mr. Santorum’s victories on Tuesday in Alabama and Mississippi raise a pivotal question: Can he build on his night of triumph to emerge as a true alternative to Mr. Romney and a credible standard bearer for his party, or will he remain just an obstacle for Mr. Romney to maneuver past on his inevitable path to the 2012 Republican presidential nomination?
The answer will in no small part depend on what Newt Gingrich does from here.

Good reply. Santorum is winning states. Newt isn’t. Santorum has the highest positive to negative ratios of any candidate in this primary. He has been a consistant conservative his whole life. Forget about a few votes here or there. They are noting compared to Romney’s past positions or Newt’s foray’s into big ideas like green energy and global warming. I love Newt, but he has high negatives. and he is just not winning over people, especially women. As for debates, the Republican candidates have had many debates already, and Newt DIDN’T win the bulk of them. They all won some. So stop this pipe dream about Newt getting Obama in a dabate format. Obama has so many negatives, any Republican candidate can defeat him in a debate, if prepared. Santorum is correct to say that a bold contrast vis-a-vie Obama is what we need.
Since there is so much outside manipulation in the primaries, if the funding is there to stay in..why not?
I am of the opinion that a lot of Dems vote in our primaries to manipulate the outcome. They will all flock back to O in the general. So the outcomes of the primaries may be distorted.
And as you said, low voter turn out has a definite affect. I also agree that the media has a “blackout” on Newt.
It appears to me that it is taking both Newt and Rick to keep Myth from getting his delegates. Neither should bow out at this point. There is no guarantee that the Newt supporters will go to Rick..or vice versa.
The religious right, Rush and Mark (Levin) won tonight and thats a bad thing?
I know you haven’t been here long but Rush, Mark, and the religious right are pretty much seen as the good guys at Free Republic.

Despite the media and 'rat spin, the current "controversy" is about funding, not legality or illegality. People sure as heck don't want to pay for the immorality and irresponsibility of others. If people want to have sex, let them pay for their own contraceptive of choice. Same goes for abortions, which under the Supreme Court ruling is legal. Let those who want them, pay for them, not force those who oppose them to do so. That's what Santorum, Romney and Gingrich are all saying. The rest is media spin.
I really don't let Mark or Rush, as much as I respect them. make my decisions.

In Alabama, "With 99 percent reporting, Santorum was ahead with 35 percent -- followed by Gingrich with 29 percent and Romney with 29 percent."
In Mississippi, "Santorum was leading with 33 percent of the vote. Gingrich was behind with 31 percent, followed by Romney with 30 percent."
In both cases, Newt is closer to Mitt than to Rick. Same order of finish in both states. Closer in Mississpii admittedly. But MS has 40 delegates compared to AL's 50.

Christie, I’m with ya. I pray for Newt to stay in, and also for people to wake up and see how much we need him now. Any other choice will be handing BHO a boundless, frightening second term that will finish off our country.
Actualy he was not. That's an urban legend. Here's his biography at the Museum of Broadcast Communications As you can see he was not yet 18, when WW-II ended. He was a college student from '46 to '51, and went to work 1951-53; program planner, producer, writer, and performer at noncommercial station WQED in Pittsburgh, 1953-62; producer and television host for the Canadian Broadcasting Company in Toronto, Ontario, 1962-64; producer and host of PBS show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood since 1967; So that rules out service in both Korea and Vietnam. No mention of any military service in that biography.
Lots of other sources confirm.
