Santorum Wins Mississippi and Alabama Primaries
By Michael O'Brien, msnbc.com -- Rick Santorum scored victories in the Mississippi and Alabama primaries on Tuesday, depriving Mitt Romney of a signature win in a conservative stronghold and raising fresh doubts about the viability of Newt Gingrich's campaign.
The former Pennsylvania senator made his case for being the lone, serious Republican challenger to Romney for the remainder of the primary by besting Gingrich in states the former speaker's campaign had previously said were essential to its long-term viability.
“We did it again,” Santorum said to wild applause from supporters in Louisiana, and amid projections by NBC News that he would win both Mississippi and Alabama.
Romney had hoped to score a victory in Mississippi, thereby proving his ability to win a state that composes part of the heart of the modern GOP. But he appeared to be heading to a third-place finish in both contests, failing to even surpass Gingrich, a candidate who’s weathered growing calls to exit the race.
A former governor of Massachusetts, Romney acknowledged these contests were an “away game” for a figure like him, marking an effort to set low expectations for how he might finish in the contests.

The Romney campaign was able to pick up delegates in both states, contributing to its march to collect the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination. His campaign was also likely to pick up those crucial delegates in Hawaii's caucuses, which were set to take place overnight. A total of 107 delegates were up for grabs between the three states on Tuesday.

C’mom. Had it not been for Gingrich, Santorum would have won MI and OH. Gingrich was tossed out of Congress by his own colleagues.
Yet, every poll out there recently shows him ahead or neck-and-neck with Obama and doing better than Gingrich against him.
All you're doing is parroting what the liberal says on the issue.
Well, yeah. Like him or hate him, you have to admit that Newt is a strategic thinker. That's why he doesn't waste money trying to win meaningless, no-delegate primaries in Missouri, while Santorum pours money down the toilet to grab a headline. That's why he's still in this thing period, despite having only won two states so far.
And Santorum's supporters tend to be the same way. They pat themselves on the back for winning two primaries by less than 4% that Santorum should easily have had by double digits, and would have three weeks ago. In politics, there really is such a thing as momentum, and for the past three weeks, Newt's has been upward and Santorum's has been downward. They can chirrip about it all they like, but that fact remains true. Newt overperformed, and Santorum underperformed. That happened because of the longer-term trending going on - something that I'm sure Newt's staffers can recognise as easily as I can, and which is why he's still saying he's in it till Tampa, even when the short-term thinkers are flabbergasted and astounded that he hasn't conceded tonight.
Apparently Santorum is getting votes somewhere.
Just imagine what Santorum could do, if had all that Casino Owners money like Newt.
The corrupt, decrepit Republican Party needs to be thrown off the cliff.
The object should be to keep Romney from reaching the magic number. It's too late for one of the alternatives to win outright.
2012 is lost, even if the GOP wins in Nov.
BARELY and despite being outspent 12-1 in Ohio.
And, Romney, at some point soon, isn't going to be able to keep spending that sort of money on smearing his opponents.
Newt went head-to-head with Romney in Florida and was beaten by double digits.
At some point reality has to set in and you're going to have realize it is Santorum or Romney. And, Santorum is the better choice.
The strength of Santorum vs Obama can be gauged by the ecstatic celebration of his victory on CNN tonight. Given the choice of the 4 GOP contenders (and I am being kind to call Ron Paul a contender but hey he shows up to the game each week)the Rats are praying for Santorum.
You have no way of knowing that, and indeed, it's likely that a lot of Newt supporters would simply have sat out.
Newt was tossed out of the Speakership (not Congress) by his own colleagues because they didn't like that he wasn;t going along to get along like a RINO. Grief, you people really don't know what you're talking about, do you?
It is now the time to ask this question ... why does Newt want Romney nominated? Because he obviously does.
