Rick Santorum's campaign is calling on conservatives to pressure Newt Gingrich to abandon his bid for the White House, a senior adviser told reporters tonight.
Senior campaign strategist John Brabender said the key for the campaign going forward will be creating an opportunity to challenge Mitt Romney one-on-one, though Brabender maintained the Santorum campaign would not directly call on Gingrich to drop out of the race.
"We're never going to call on anybody to get out, but what we are calling is on Tea Party supporters and conservatives is to rally behind the only candidate that has demonstrated over and over again that he's the one who can compete against Mitt Romney," Brabender said.
"The real key right now is, can we get an opportunity to get a one-on-one shot with Mitt Romney," he said.

Santorum can’t beat Romney, and definitely can’t beat Obama.
I’m for Newt. The man with a vision.
Period.
Perry, Cain, and Bachmann were focused on "fixes" to problems in Wash. DC and had to go. Much of it was self-induced but noticed how now, Gingrich is being escorted to the exits- by whom? The original 'Contract with America' guy?
After O'barfa declared us "the enemy" while recruiting Mexican votes, I realized what we were up against and how nasty things would be. McCain had no idea what he faced (and probably still doesn't) because prior to O'commie we'd never had a muslim marxist run for President before. This guy doesn't plan on handing over the keys to the White House any time soon.
Romney's two hurdles include Romneycare (mandated healthcare) and driving around with a dog on the car roof. Oh, and maybe his Mormanism. Oh, and maybe his two Cadillacs.
Santorum has only to defend his voting record, endorsements of Spector and Romney, taking a dead baby home, and wanting to outlaw the vibrator.
And Newt has baggage.
Obama's communist cadre will have their work cut out for them. This election will be different because we 'know' who he is now and we'll rub his face in his dismal failure as President at every turn- or at least we should.
His approval is at 50% today- but that's before we as Citizens United begin to turn the big guns on this skinny, lying, Alynski punk. When we turn "the spotlight on James Brown, now. Yeah, yeah" his numbers will drop to his bedrock 30%. "Ain't no sunshine when" his numbers are gone.
Personally, I can't wait. Sending this lovely couple back to Chicago (America's commie ovum) would give great pleasure. As a parting gift, may I recommend a couple of solar panels?
Our good conservative candidates do NOT need to "drop out". We need to work together!

“He could easily win Alabama, Mississipi, Louisiana”
How different are these states from Tennessee? Right now, Santorum has the advantage here.
“Kansas”
Oklahoma is closer to Kansas than Georgia is to Kansas. Rick is stronger in Kansas than Newt is in Kansas.
“Kentucky”
Newt lost in Tennessee, which is closer to Georgia than Kentucky is to Georgia. Kentucky is more likely to go to Rick than to Newt.
“Indiana”
Rick had 2.5x his support in Ohio. Newt is not competitive in Indiana.
“North Carolina:
See Tennessee - Santorum has lead in North Carolina for quite some time now.
“TEXAS”
University of Texas shows Santorum to be up by 27 points.
“Calling for anyone to drop out at this point is silly.”
Not when it’s throwing delegates to Romney as has happened in Michigan, Ohio and Washington. Romney has a substantial delegate lead and that lead continues to grow.
“This baby is going all the way to convention”
What will you say when Romney walks away with the Republican nomination with 50 percent + 1? Right now, that’s the course we are on - no brokered convention, no nothing. Straight up Romney win.
You are long on name and short on facts. This is delegate chasing, baby, not caucus state wins! Rick’s delegates are half, even mostly NON-COMMITED. Newt’s fine and looking south all the way to TEXAS.
One on one is GAME OVER for the conservative voice this primary.
Why can’t Santorum beat Romney? He’s done so seven times already. He can win the nomination, he’s competitive in states where Gingrich is an afterthought.
Where is Newt going to get the delegates from? Mississippi? Alabama?
What happens if Santorum beats him in Alabama like he just did in Tennessee?
How is Newt going to compile sufficient delegates to take on Romney, now that GA, by far his largest source of delegates, is gone.

I continue to think that Newt Gingrich is the only one of these four contenders who can beat Obama. That may sound crazy if he can’t beat the other three, but it seems like he’s in some sort of weird historical black hole, unable to get his rather obvious message (adult supervision) out into the primaries. I guess the moon base business didn’t help, and he falls behind on the life-partner question too, but what the hell, when did America ever elect a first lady? Come on ... these are dangerous times, we need the best possible leadership for America, and since I’m an alien, it has to be Newt. Oh wait a minute, being an alien is okay? well then ... O’Donnell for president !!!
Just kidding on that last part, I know butkus about economics, and I would bomb Iran just for the hell of it ... who wouldn’t? Besides, I’m talking to myself here.
He only campaigned for Mitt in ‘08 because it was essentially down to Mitt and McCain and Santorum understandably can’t stand McCain.
Do you even know what it means to be a socialist? If he’s a socialist, then that means 80-90% of your fellow Americans are also socialists.
You Newtsters are delusional and will be giving us Romney. Thanks in advance. /s
I appreciate your logical and thoughtful posts on this thread. Personally, I think Gingrich would make a better President than Santorum, but I voted for Santorum because I can see the writing on the wall. Anyone who thinks Gingrich has any remote chance at this point is either delusional or stupid and telling me otherwise just further proves my point. Unfortunately, I’m not sure Santorum has much of a chance either.
Newt didn’t campaign for Ohio and Santorum couldn’t beat Romney one-on-one.
Sheesh, what is going on here at FR?? Newt is 3rd everywhere but his home state, pretty much. He has less delegates. He doesn’t look good for the next few contests.
So we can wait til next week if you want, but seriously. It is time for Newt to consider. It’s time for newt’s supporters to consider. One guy upthread honestly said he hates Santorum so much he’d rather have Romney. Well, that is honest, and that is the true choice. Santorum or Romney.
If newt were ahead, I’d say santo drop out. It’s not February any more. It’s super Tuesday. There isn’t time to have us keep voting our favorite like American idol. This is about supreme court nominations. This is about a conservative in the White House. It will be Mitt Romney unless we quickly gather behind the leading conservative. Ask anyone in the news, even the libs. The person closest to beating Romney is Santorum.
Wake up, Freepers. I’d say we have one week left.
The arrogance of Team Santorum is getting really, #ing tedious.
Is Rick Santorum the Léon Degrelle of the 21st Century?
>> If newt were ahead, Id say santo drop out.
Doubtful.
If either Rick or Newt, throw support to one or the other, watch how quickly O-Undocumented is “finally” found to be in office illegally, or forced out of office.
