Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu handed US President Barack Obama a gift on Monday that spoke volumes about Israel’s tensions with Iran – an ancient Hebrew tome about a Persian plot to annihilate Jews, otherwise known as the Scroll of Esther.
The Scroll, or the Megila, tells a tale of palace intrigue featuring a Jewish beauty, Queen Esther, who charms a Persian king into foiling an evil adviser’s genocidal plans for her people some 2,500 years ago.
“Then too, they wanted to wipe us out,” Netanyahu told Obama, according to an Israeli official.
Jews around the world will gather in synagogues on Wednesday to read the Megila, on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Purim, a celebration of salvation and of turning the tables on one’s foes.
“And the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they would unto them that hated them,” one of the verses says.
Netanyahu, who has called Iran’s nuclear program a threat to the Jewish state’s existence, made a point of telling reporters after his White House meeting with the president that he had given the Megila to Obama. The Israeli leader, in a frosty meeting with Obama last May, lectured the president on Jewish history and criticized his approach to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

I think the ‘gift’ was a not so subtle hint that he isn’t going to wait for Obama’s approval before going after Iran’s nuke sites.

I believe this gift was Netanyahu informing Obama that the Shyt is about to hit the fan.
Absolutely! As others have noted, Obama will consider the gift nothing but trash to be dumped into some room at the White House for “meaningless gifts”. However, hopefully some American Jews who do not support the modern day obliteration of the Jewish people will take notice that Obama is encouraging Iran in their design to destroy Israel and the Jews by his foreign policies encouraging Israel not to take action to defend herself.
So, did Obama give Netanyahu in return a gift-boxed DVD of Obama’s speeches?
Or perhaps a signed family photo?
Or maybe an Obama 2012 campaign button?

I think one of the things holding Israel back from attacking Iran is the ancient history of the two peoples.
In the ME, memories are very long. I have heard Persian muslims talk proudly of “OUR Jews”. One of my friends who lived there said, “If it were not for Cyrus the Great, there would not BE an Israel today.”
In the long history of the area, islam is relatively new. A lot of Persians remember the old days fondly.
I think Israel wants to be an ally of Persia again.
Not so subtle, indeed. Bibi could have just referenced the scroll in conversation. But to actually hand the President a copy and then to inform the press about it is quite telling. The PM does not trust that the President is intelligent enough to grasp the reality of what lies ahead and the seriousness of Israel’s vow to save and protect themselves. And Netanyahu certainly doesn’t trust the President when it comes to relating the facts of their meeting to the press.
Venturer, I believe you spelled Shia incorrectly. Shia Islam is the Muslim majority in Iran.
