Don Cherry knows the historical record. He knows that he blasted the Jean Chrétien Liberals for not supporting the United States invasion of Iraq, caned Montreal Canadiens fans for booing the American national anthem and, when coffins carrying Canadian troops began trickling home from Afghanistan, turned the final 30 seconds of Coachs Corner into a national war memorial.
Don Cherry knows exactly what he has done and exactly what he is: a right-winger, a patriot, an angry old white guy working for a liberal employer in a nation long painted Liberal red until a pro-monarchy, pro-military, tough-on-crime prime minister came along and began repainting it blue.
The old hockey coach never changes, but maybe Canada has. And maybe Mr. Cherry was ahead of the curve, politically, and maybe the rest of the country beyond the pinko bastion of downtown Toronto and those socialists down in Quebec is finally catching up.

Maybe he is correct in his thinking, but someone needs to talk to him about his wardrobe.
What? I LOVE his wardrobe!
I was still in canada when he made his rant on CBC’s hockey night in canada about canada who should support the US invasion of Iraq, including stars and stripes necktie to boot. 2003. This occurred over an entire week, and in that stretch ...the Maple Laffs lost to Vancouver. Don Cherry is a friend of America.
May Zer0 fail.
Don Cherry rules! Reminds me of the older Canadians I know, more like Brits, less like frogs.
The Wrath of Grapes. :)
Though I must say some of his HNIC apparel shows that some people really can shoot their couch and wear it.
I was sitting in the airport at Vancouver, BC, waiting for some friends to arrive for our ski trip to Whistler when I saw the replay of when he almost got into fisticuffs with his partner about the U.S. starting the invasion of Iraq.
I've been a fan ever since........
I was thinking that Canada was really turning around, then I read about the “conservatives” in Alberta passing a bill to make it illegal to teach that sexual deviancy is sinful, even in a home school.

I remember that. I never thought I’d see Cherry wear stars and stripes anything because it’s not Canadian. As he said on another occasion. “The US and British are good, but we’re the best” referencing international humanitarian missions. To him, Iraq was an act of neighbors not being there for one another.
Cherry goes on the Jim Rome show once every 3 months to talk hockey and he’s more American than any of our limp-wrist liberals who call themselves “American”.
Yes, I did remember that also. Ron Maclean, his partner on HNIC has always been a loser. That’s why he always looks at Cherry’s crotch’ when he talks to him and teased as the ‘crotchwatcher’. Cherry, also narrated the entire ‘good stuff’ that America did for the world such as the Berlin Airlift in one of the intermissions.
When is couch season anyway??? :)
As a hockey-loving Detroiter back in the 1970s, I used to catch Don on channel 9. Snappy dresser. Only over the past ten years did I come to realize what an ally Americans had in this guy. Bravo, Don!
There is a real conservative party in Alberta who is poised to challenge the “Progressive Conservatives” in the next election:
They are the Wildrose Alliance:
I know of them, but just the fact the the Progressive Conservatives go back to the same old playbook every chance they get, even after the Reform Party’s ascension, and especially in Alberta, makes me lose heart. (Wife is from Alberta, and it has much to recommend it.)
If you get the chance, watch a Don Cherry’s Rockem Sockem Hockey video. You will not be disappointed.
