BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) A large map of Libya hangs on the wall in the home of Idris al-Rahel, with a line down the middle dividing the country in half.
Al-Rahel, a former army officer, leads a movement to declare semiautonomy in eastern Libya, where most of the country's oil fields are located. The region's top tribal leaders meet Tuesday in the east's main city Benghazi to consider unilaterally announcing an eastern state, linked to the west only by a tenuous "federal union."
Opponents fear such a declaration could be the first step toward outright dividing the country. But some easterners say they are determined to end the domination and discrimination by the west that prevailed under dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
Al-Rahel points to the capital Tripoli on the map, in the west. "All troubles came from here," he said, "but we will not permit this to happen again."
The move shows how six months after Gadhafi's fall, the central government in Libya has proved incapable of governing at all. Other countries that shed their leaders in the Arab Spring revolts Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen are going through rocky transitions, but none has seen a collapse of central authority like Libya. The collapse has only worsened as cities, towns, regions, militias and tribes all act on their own, setting up their independent power centers.
After liberation from the rule of Gadhafi, Libyans dreamed their country of 6 million could become another Dubai a state with a small population, flush with petro-dollars, that is a magnet for investment. Now they worry that it is turning more into another Somalia, a nation that has had no effective government for more than 20 years.
Libya may not face literal fragmentation, but it could be doomed to years of instability as it...

Why isn't the GOP kicking their ass every election?
Their culture and religion combined make stability almost impossible. They need a dictator!
Villages. We want each little village to do whatever they feel like doing. We need 3 million different countries out there to get ‘er done.
Gee, what a shock. Isn’t this the most likely result of what we did?
This is a perfect example of what happens when ISLAM takes over...total chaos...Afghanistan, Iraq, and soon Syria...all heading towards this debacle. Iran ad Saudi Arabia are the only ones with a “illusion” of stability - but there’s a price for that...
I think we all know that Islam cannot stand - and that it serves no purpose other than promoting violence and control...it’s time we outlaw it in the US and secure our country before certain areas become over saturated with a Moslem population - and they strike out with violence and mayhem!

This AP Marxist bitch is full of crap. She’s trying to stir the Moslem Brotherhood pot and doesn’t have a clue what she’s talking about. Al-Rahel is a nit, a pimple on Libya’s butt.
The country is controlled by the militias, led by Osama al-Juwali who’s the defense minister in Libya’s interim government.
Al-Juwali is highly respected in Libya for capturing Kaddhafi’s son and sealing the border to prevent Kaddhafi’s thugs from escaping with Libya’s treasures.
He’s moved his militias into position to meet any threat by the hot-head teenagers controlling a tiny segment of Tripoli. The Tripoli residents are very annoyed by minor factions trying to create trouble.
He’s a graduate from the Tripoli Military Academy and was head of Zintan’s military council. To those who don’t have a scorecard, Al-Juwali is a big cheese.
He has superb command skills and put down a feud between two militias who were fighting for control of the Tripoli airport.
So everyone who may be believing this crap from that Muslim AP whore, cool your jets. Maggie Mitchell is a slut. When her muslim buddys run out of goats, they give her a call.
Shocking! Whoulda thunk it?
Unfortunately you are correct and America's foreign policy with these countries needs to be to either have them on our side or, barring that, not our enemy.
Their culture is driven by envy, jealousy and suspicion. They are like crabs trapped in a bucket.

What do you think is the best long(ish)-term outcome to the situation (in Libya, Egypt and maybe Syria)? Continued military rule? Is that sustainable?
“What do you think is the best long(ish)-term outcome to the situation (in Libya, Egypt and maybe Syria)? Continued military rule? Is that sustainable?”
Sorry, I can’t answer your question about Egypt and Syria. I know something about Libya and believe we have a good chance of getting Libya on our side. I fear, though, that that prick obama will mess it up and try to grease the rails for his muslim buddies.
Then again, obama and his stupid leftists haven’t a clue of what’s going on in Libya.
We do have a number of mercenaries and businessmen from America, France and Italy who are moving chess pieces around Libya and preparing the way to go western rather than Muslim. I’m also guessing that Israel is engaged in Libya, too.
My sources, for what they’re worth, are telling me that the Libyan people are leaning toward the West. The one fact that AP mentioned is that Libya wants to become a second Dubai, “the gold city,” and attract tourists from around the world.
The Libyans, especially in Tripoli, are not happy with a small number of Muslim punks roaming the city and causing trouble. Al-Juwali has the guns and horsepower to make the Muslim troublemakers disappear.
I think that’s a fair assesment for Libya. Libya has always been a moderate Middle East trade center throughout its history.
Anyway, this is all MHO.
Cheers, FRiend.
I would just note that you sound like Vojislav Seselj.
Where’s that picture of the First Anarchists dressed in Red and Black and bumping fists???? Mission accomplished in Libya. America’s next.
Quote from Wikipedia: “He expressed his fear of seeing Bosnia and Herzegovina turn into a republic dominated by Muslims.”
I guess he got it - and others of us get it as well.
Go to my website - view my background - and read just a little of what I have on there...I’ve never had a problem with other religions outside of Christianity - and there are some that have used Christianity for their own sordid purposes...but Christianity has exposed them - and dealt with them judicially. Islam - sees nothing they do as wrong.
As a US Citizen and commissioned Officer - my oath is to protect the US Constitution - and Islam wants to destroy it. They have drawn their line in the sand - and I have drawn mine...I really don’t care who i sound like - I have a country to defend - apparently Vojislav Seselj wanted to protect his country as well.
Why isn’t the GOP kicking their ass every election? ....They don’t WANT to. They just want the dregs of the corruption they are offered.
The one fact that AP mentioned is that Libya wants to become a second Dubai, the gold city, and attract tourists from around the world.... That is EXACTLY what my friend (?) from Pakistan said about Lebanon and their troubles. Hamas was hired to to cause trouble in Lebanon in order to send tourists to Dubai. Does our Stupid Department of State understand this at all? No, of course not.
I wasn't criticizing you.
