Israeli PM Demands Obama Commit To Military Action If Iran Sanctions Fail [Two Sides "Poles Apart"]

Israeli PM Demands Obama Commit To Military Action If Iran Sanctions Fail

Chris McGreal 1 March 2012

Israeli officials say that Binyamin Netanyahu is not happy with Obama's 'vague assertion' that all options are on the table in dealing with Iran.

Israel is pressing Barack Obama for an explicit threat of military action against Iran if sanctions fail and Tehran's nuclear programme advances beyond specified "red lines".

Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, is expected to raise the issue at a White House meeting on Monday after weeks of intense diplomacy in which Obama has dispatched senior officials – including his intelligence, national security and military chiefs – to Jerusalem to try and dampen down talk of an attack.

Diplomats say that Israel is angered by the Obama administration's public disparaging of early military action against Iran, saying that it weakens the prospect of Tehran taking the warnings from Israel seriously.

The two sides are attempting to agree a joint public statement to paper over the divide but talks will not be made easier by a deepening distrust in which the Israelis question Obama's commitment to confront Iran while the White House is frustrated by what it sees as political interference by Netanyahu to mobilise support for Israel's position in the US Congress.

"They are poles apart," said one diplomatic source. "The White House believes there is time for sanctions to work and that military threats don't help. The Israelis regard this as woolly thinking.

They see Iran as headed towards a bomb, even though they agree there is no evidence Tehran has made that decision yet, and they want the White House to up the ante. The White House has the Europeans behind its position but it's losing Congress."

When Israel attacks, Obama will have no choice to commit. Netanyahu needs to put him on the spot publically.

Hussein “my muslim faith” 0bama would/will apply sanctions up until the hour and minute that Iran launches to wipe Israel off the map. And, perhaps beyond that time as well...

Zero will never commit. Zero is a Kenyan. Kenya and Iran have very good relations at the moment. It should surprise noone where Zero’s loyalties truely lie.

I'm not sure at all that I appreciate a foreign government trying to dictate our military and foreign policy...even if their reasons are good ones.

I believe he plans to tell Obama that if the US won’t act, then Iran will go it alone.

You’re right, but you do realize that this very well could be the start of World War III. I think that Israel has little choice in the matter but if they attack, the Russians, the Iranians, and the Syrians will intervene. Can’t blame the Israelis though since they are threatened with extinction of they don’t respond.

That will draw the US into this mess and things will be continue to escalate. Not sure if it is inevitable but certainly likely. Iran is a real world problem.

Wholly woolly.

Let’s face the facts. Zer0 has no intentions of giving Israel our support. Israel had better play their hand with their European partners who will also lose if Iran goes nuclear. Zer0 wants Israel gone and will let Iran’s desire to control the Middle East take out their only real obstacle.

This will not be the start of WWIII.

Israel will destroy the Iranian nuclear facilities in Bushehr and elsewhere. The countries surrounding Israel will attack (or attempt to attack) Israel with thousands of missles. Israel will destroy them with nuclear (yes, nuclear) weapons.

The “war” will be measured in days, or perhaps even hours.

Israel will win decisively.

Israel ought be ANGRY— I ‘ve wondered for years why more Americans have NOT been as angry as I am about the 0 . Israel has every right to demand verification that the US will at least promise to act if the sanctions fail. But Israel likewise would be a fool if it trusted ANYTHING Obama has said without outside independent verification from at least tow sources his word is CRAP.

-——If Iran Sanctions Fail -——

The sanctions will never fail. The Messiah’s disciples will determine sanction success or failure.

They will never determine they have failed. They will never, that is never ever, make a determination that will cause them to go to war.

War is obsolete. That is settled moon bat dogma. It has been fact since the end of the Vietnam war.

I don't see it as Israel dictating our foreign policy. I see this as Israel trying to put obama on the spot to honor promises we have made.

It is obama's own fault through his actions that Israel does not trust him, none of our allies trust this gov't.

Israel is not only looking after Israel, she is doing us a favor in forcing obamas hand on a world stage.

Yours is the only logical eventual conclusion this untrained, non-informed outside observer sees possible, given the cards which are being played geopolitically.

Israel is being forced into a nuclear corner. At some point, they’ll have no more corner to back into.

Wish it wasn’t so, but that’s how it seems likely to happen.

There’s no *way* I think America should fight another war in the middle east.

We need to bring back our factories from China, bring back our focus from being world police, and bring back our troops from a lot of places.

And put them on our borders.

America first. Let Israel fight their own fights.

We have PLENTY of problems of our own, which we have ignored for a very long time.

Get our own house in order first.

Seriously. We need to stop fighting everyone else’s fights.

Or we’ll be unable to fight our own.
