The photos only offered us a glimpse. But it was all we needed in order to know that Michelle Obama wore something special to the Governors' Dinner at the White House last night.
Forget the Oscars red carpet, the First Lady's asymmetric gown gave the A-list a serious run for their money.
The pale, cream-coloured gown had a crystal-embellished bodice in a design of leaves and flowers, and a chiffon bow at the shoulder.

THANK YOU!
When I saw that foto that was the exact image that came to my mind. I was hoping someone would post it.
Kudos!
It was a formal, black tie White House supper, official White House china and all (the table is also set formally). She was not overdressed. Since she was the hostess of the party, she sets the dress, and everyone else is judged accordingly.

I actually think the dress is beautiful. (for once!)
A white wine can be perfectly acceptable, only true wine snobs stick to the "rules" of color anymore.
It is also not uncommon to match the wine with the side dishes or the sauce that is served with the meat.
The creamed spinich and crab mac 'n cheese may have had something to do with the wine selection.
Why did you feel the need to give us a definition of gauche? I find the folks here quite knowledgable.
i only like red wine, so i order it with salmon, rules and gaucheness be damned! : ) i also agree the dress is beautiful. and that is a rarity with her taste.
The dress is gorgeous. She wore another gown in that shade at a state function and it was also very pretty.
The inspiration for her gown:
LOL , a gift basket! That is exactly what I thought of when I saw the dress. And Michelle certainly is no “gift basket!”
I don't care if Michelle has ever, or does ever have pride in her country.
The important fact is that most of her country has no pride in her.
one-shoulder floral beaded metallic sequin gown by Naeem Khan best guess, 5-7000.00 at least.
I grew up with these rules too and the first one was to try not to “over-do” or “out-do”, or make your guests uncomfortable. Black tie is not the same as being an actor on the red carpet. Most of this weeks dresses worn by the actresses would not be appropriate for the White House event.
They have consultants and a separate book of rules for the White House. I wonder if it got burned with some other famous books? LOL
I seriouly wonder how many thousands of dollars have been spent on surgery and makeup.
Quite a lot, I would imagine.
This entire thread all you do is defend the Obongo’s as you do on almost every thread like this. She could come down in her Spanx and topless and you would say she looked good and it was ok because she sets the attire.
Bet you voted for the Marxist Kenyan and bet you do it again.
Enjoy your afternoon.
I remember that one....

Michelle should wear this color more often, the two have been my favorite.
Taylor Swift (sp?) wears that color gown often, she always looks beautiful. Though Swift could wear a flour sack and looks gorgeous!
Yes, that is the one. Beautiful.
I would never have guessed beige, golden type colors would be so flattering. I usually went for black, dark blue, darker greens or soft pinks.
Seeing Michelle and Swift wearing that color, it appears it is flattering for most skin and hair colors.
Beautiful, truly...
My post was to Mylife, who is a close friend.
We accuse each other of being “food snobs” all the time.
The entire post was meant in jest to him.
