Why would you suggest it is either coincidence or something questionable, rather than completely rational. Santorum has openly shown disrespect for the Tenth Amendment; shown himself in favor of extending Federal interference into local functions. Romney, for all his past failings, has given a States Rights' explanation--he was accommodating his fellow citizens of Massachusetts.
Ron Paul has been one of the most stalwart defenders of the Jefferson/Madison States' Rights position in Congress, over the past generation.
Do not look for something ominous or covert, where only consistent principle is involved.
