Romney and the White Horse Prophecy

When Mitt Romney received his patriarchal blessing as a Michigan teenager, he was told that the Lord expected great things from him. All young Mormon men — the “worthy males” of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it is officially known — receive such a blessing as they embark on their requisite journeys as religious missionaries. But at 19 years of age, the youngest son of the most prominent Mormon in American politics — a seventh-generation direct descendant of one of the faith’s founding 12 apostles—Mitt Romney had been singled out as a destined leader.

--Snip--

was humming with talk that its president, Mitt Romney, would become the first Mormon president of the United States. “If not Mitt, then who?” was the ubiquitous slogan within the elite organization. The pious world of BYU was expected to spawn the man who would lead the Mormons into the White House and fulfill the prophecies of the church’s founder, Joseph Smith Jr., which Romney has avidly sought to realize.

--snip-- Smith prophesied that if the U.S. Congress did not accede to his demands that “they shall be broken up as a government and God shall damn them.” Smith viewed capturing the presidency as part of the mission of the church. He had predicted the emergence of “the one Mighty and Strong” — a leader who would “set in order the house of God” — and became the first of many prominent Mormon men to claim the mantle.

--snip--

Romney is the product of this culture. At BYU, he was idolized by fellow students and referred to, only half jokingly, as the “One Mighty and Strong.”

I’m afraid of what the MSM will throw on their newscasts if Romney is the nominee.

Some will be true, some will be half true, some will be outright lies. A lot of it won’t have one tiny bit to do with Romney being president but it will still be on the national nightly news just for shock value.

The usual things of “Jesus and Satan were brothers” and “magic underwear” will be mild and us LDS members will be wishing for the days that’s all we had to put up with.

That will be an understatement.

Non-FReepers don't understand that the reason why the MSM is so eager to trash Santorum or Gingrich and why they work so hard to play up Romney is that they know they can walk all over Romney and the Mormons. All of the crazy crap that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young said, all of the crazy crap done by the break-away groups these days, all of the weird beliefs, etc. It will be front and center.

And you'll have plenty of Obama supporters looking for revenge after we dared bring up Reverend Wright.

If they do, they will look mighty hypocritical, considering how they’ve all propped up and relied on Harry Reid for the last decade as Senate Majority Leader.

I’m not saying they wouldn’t throw Reid under the bus, which they undoubtedly will, but they will look really bad and two faced doing it.

So the White Horse prophecy is not a part of Mormon culture, known to many Mormons and having been passed down by various church leaders, what has kept it so front and center among Mormons for 170 years?

Did the article say that it was official doctrine in the religion, I don't think it did.

The media can destroy a Mormon Bishop, Republican Presidential candidate, while ignoring a Democrat Senator in a safe Nevada seat, while blind folded, and with one hand tied behind their backs, that would be nothing to them they do that kind of thing everyday.

Yes...but that brings up Rev. Wright all over again and I don't think they want to go there.

I'd say its a wash. The most Mormon bashing I have seen is right here on FR.

I would say it’s part of the Mormon culture, but doctrinally...no, it’s been thoroughly “torn to shreds”, to to speak. It’s not even hanging by a thread, considering how it’s been lambasted by Church leadership for the last 100 years.

Mormons that actually research this, know this. The reason it’s culturally significant is that it borrows elements of truth, that LDS actually believe, that the Constitution will hang in the balance and need to be saved, partially by members of the Church.

Do I think it’s Romney? Not on your life.

Ezra Taft Benson, who was President of the Church and also served as Secretary of Agriculture to Eisenhower for 8 years while he was an Apostle, said specifically that the Constitution would not be saved in Washington. (see above quotes)

I think Washington, and by definition the Government, is toast. Get your food and ammo, it’s going to get ugly.

The article sounds pretty accurate then, it never said it was Doctrine, I don’t believe and it seems to permeate Mormon culture.

Anything that helps us keep Romney out of the White House, is all for the good, and good for America, to that we can all give a hearty, patriotic cheer.

Ah, but it does say it, and words it oh so craftily and subtly. Lost of people on this thread buying it too.

“Out of Smith’s national political ambitions grew what would become known in Mormon circles as the “White Horse Prophecy” — a belief ingrained in Mormon culture and passed down through generations by church leaders that the day would come when the U.S. Constitution would “hang like a thread as fine as a silk fiber” and the Mormon priesthood would save it.”

It doesn’t separate the WHP from the borrowed theme, then uses it in the title. That’s just really bad reporting.

And it even says Church Leaders teach it, when in fact they do just the opposite and denounce it.

Yellow journalism at it’s finest. Thanks Salon.

Seems alright to me, many Mormons seem to believe this about Mitt and that is what the article is about.

You were the one misleading when you tried to dismiss it by pretending they were claiming it was Mormon “doctrine”.

Writing about Romney’s bizarre religion is a necessary part of getting out the facts on him and his bizarre obsession with being President.

Wait, how is this not horrible reporting?

“the “White Horse Prophecy” — a belief ingrained in Mormon culture and passed down through generations by church leaders”

That’s certainly akin to saying it’s doctrine. It’s just bad journalism, no matter how you look at it, especially when it’s been so vocally denounced for over a hundred years.

They ignored the klansman Byrd for 40 plus years while slamming every republican as racist

Frankly I am much more interested in Mitt Romney’s obsession to destroy conservatism and be a president than I am in your obsession with the article.

Do you have anything to say about Romney and what the scum bag will do conservatism and our nation?

The most Mormon bashing I have seen is right here on FR.

It's telling the truth about mormonism, not bashing individual mormons but you knew that already. Keep playing that victim card.

I’m interested in truth coming from the Conservative side. If we have to use the same tactics as the left does to disseminate information, then I don’t have much hope for any of us. You can defend Salon’s tactics if you choose, but I don’t think we should engage in similar ways.
I realize what you are trying to do again Romney, but as a Mormon, I don’t see things the same way you do in reasons to oppose him. I don’t believe he’s the best conservative, but have no qualms about his faith, obviously.

I’ve added about as much as I can to this thread, hopefully given the other side a little, agree with me or not... not sure there’s anything more to add. That’s all for now.

Your fear seems fake, and really is just your way of defending Romney, this article was a story that should have been written.

We will see many, many, stories like this exposing Mormonism, if Romney gets the nomination.

Wright is old news and a minister in a church that Obama left years ago, the media isn’t interested.

Bishop Romney is a high ranking cult leader who would finish the presidency and then be promoted even higher within his cult, Romney’s entire family history in America is of devotion to that cult, the media will find much to cover about Romney.

Reverend Wright retired years ago, Obama left the church, years ago.

There is no story there, but the Bishop Romney story has not yet started, and it is deep and dark.
