Nike Foamposite Galaxy shoe release causes rioting at a Florida mall

Not again. In a situation reminiscent of the craziness that broke out in December when Nike released its retro version of a popular Air Jordan basketball shoe, police were called in late Thursday to break up a crowd that had gathered at the Florida Mall near Orlando in anticipation of the release of a new limited edition, glow-in-the-dark Nike shoe.

More than 100 officers in riot gear were needed to disperse several hundred people who law enforcement officials said became unruly as they waited for the $220 Nike Galaxy Air Foamposite Ones to go on sale. There were no arrests or injuries reported. The launch of the shoes were timed to coincide with this weekend's NBA All-Star Game festivities in Orlando. The game is on Sunday night.

A similar scene played out at a Washington, D.C.-area mall early Friday where fans waited to get the coveted Nike Foamposite Galaxy shoes. Police in Hyattsville, Md., made one arrest, as the crowd there was estimated at over 100.

Early Friday, Foot Locker announced that it was canceling the shoe's release at certain malls and stores. "Our priority is the safety of the community," Foot Locker said in a statement.

But Gionvanni Mecado, a 14-year-old from Kissimmee, Florida, told the Orlando Sun-Sentinel he's not buying the cancellation drama.

"I don't even believe them," Mercado told the paper.

Nike has had problems with riotous crowds before. In December, Nike's retro Air Jordans release caused fights to break out at malls across the country. In Seattle, cops used pepper spray to subdue what they said were unruly sneaker-heads.

"Mobs are one thing," Stephen Douglas wrote on TheBigLead.com. "Sneaker mobs are another. Nike needs to start making enough sneakers for everyone and stop releasing them at midnight."

I’m sure that a LOT of them have income - provided to them by the 50.5% of us who produce and pay taxes.

That is why they have the disposable income to buy these overpriced chi-com booties and we don’t.

It's is obvious that having Nike tennis shoes is very important to certain groups of American’s, in fact it is so important is should be a right. Therefore I propose that Insurance Companies be required to provide Nike's free of charge, regardless of religious objections... /sarcasm

What do we do to help them? That's IMPOSSIBLE. Nothing more to be said, but I will.

We have spent almost 60 years helping them, they are entitled, doncha know, and WANT TO REMAIN ILLETERATE.

Bigger question: Where the hell are they getting their money to spend that much on stupid SHOES? (don't answer, I know).

Want to see what they are truly like? Watch Hardcore Pawn sometime, out of Detroit. That is what the black community looks like, and wants to stay that way. They want our respect? ROFL. DISS ON THEM.

Something needs to be done, to save these people from themselves.

If they would stop segregating themselves from the rest of society and adopt this culture, things would change drastically.

Maybe the company should “release” the shoes only for Internet sale.

No, because then the government would have to provide free internet service to the Amish. Maybe we already do.

Even though I know that price is indirectly drug fueled (drug dealing gang banger buys bling shoes) it still amazes me in this economy.

I think when stores have events like this where people do the big chicken over tennis shoes, they ought to hand out clubs at the door. Let um have at it.

I particularly remember on young woman who was at least 75 lbs overweight checking out at WalMart. Her hair was professionally coiffed (red hair extensions, woven tresses) and finger nails with individual designs on them. Jeans were tight tight tight but looked brand new - designer they were. Blouse was some sort of silk and jewelry to beat the band.

She pulled up a cart that had enough stuff in it for two carts. 6 pack drinks were straddled on the cart rim all the way round. Filled with steaks, meats, rib packs, expensive foods. I’ve never in my entire life filled up a cart like that.

Her bill rang up over $300. She whips out the Georgia Peach EBT card and swipes it gingerly through the swiper (had to watch the nails, yo). Slips the card in her back pocket (only thing that would fit there)

On the way to the parking lot, I see her unloading her booty into a brand new Pearl White Escalade with rims that must have been 2 grand apiece.

It doesn’t amaze me, you and me are paying for this crap. I stopped working in December and retired - I’m done giving most of what I earn to these people.

That's because you're greedy and don't want to pay your fair share. /s

Yes....I am so ashamed of myself. Maybe I can redeem myself by becoming a baby-daddy to some lady and we can get that EBT, EITC, AFDC and so on... At least then, I’ll be part of what seems to be the majority now....

to some lady

I'm afraid you're going to have to set your standards a bit lower than that.....I don't think "ladies" find themselves becoming baby-mammas. But, you're on the right track...... It's like being a pirate in "Pirates of the Caribbean," --"Take what you can, give nothing back."

I just thought of a new urban movie idea -- "Pirates of the Escalade."

Posted the other day, same story, different source. I read the comments to that article (not the thread); someone who claims to have been there said it was well mixed, not just the “usual suspects”.

Surely they all have SmartPhones, iPads, or other internet-beebers.
