I am surprised with Santorum's staying power. I actually expected Romney to lead by 10pt by today.

I still expect him to win Michigan and Arizona by 10+ points.

Santorum has likely crested and is on his way back down.

Who's next? Again?

Gingrich, being a magnanimous man, cleared out of Michigan for Santorum to take on Romney alone.

It certainly won’t be RuPaul that only leaves 1.

For any Michigan voter to be so stupid as to fall for this trickery/ambush by Romney and his sidekick, Ru...is beyond belief.

I don’t know if it was magnanimus or shrewd political strategery by Newt, but I hope it still works.
Just don’t expect Santorum to return the favor to Newt.

Ras consistently demonstrates in numbers the demise of the American intellect, values, and her Constitution. Santorum may be a gaffe machine, shooting both feet off in concert with shooting off his mouth, an unnecessarily unsubtle oaf, but he is not an empty suit with hair, and he is a Christian willing to defend the faith of the nation’s founding, its Constitution, its Bill of Rights.

Romney is a proud, fine socialist, at a time when government of, by and FOR a free people is in peril, but key to our survival.

You have to give SOME credit to Santorum.

It's not like he's been helping his own cause over the last couple of weeks.

Just don’t expect Santorum to return the favor to Newt.

In comparison of running a clean race, he is above the rest of the candidates. And no, I don't expect Saint Santo to return any favors. The other three have been running negative ads on and off against Gingrich since Iowa.

I can no longer invest life energy in a race in which the electorate is so easily swayed by Television Commercials. I think I’ll devote the rest of my year to disrespecting Obama.

This poll is not surprising after the double team by Ron and Mitt, plus Rick’s debate performance. I expect the margin to widen.

What I’m really wondering is, is there a hope that Newt and Rick could team up? Now that it is pretty obvious that Ron and Mitt have a deal, I don’t see Rick being strong armed into a ticket with Mitt, even if the GOP E may have had that in mind.

I would think that there is too much bad blood on the floor between the two. We need to keep the ticket as conservative as possible.

Newt is by far the superior leader IMHO, but if he and Rick could work together, I think Newt could get enough done in 4 years that he could then step aside and let his VP, Rick, run. In that length of time Rick could learn a lot from Newt and be more ready to lead.

If Mitt and Ron want to play that game, surely we can find a way to out maneuver them.

Would love to see a discussion of this. Thanks!

"I can no longer invest life energy in a race in which the electorate is so easily swayed by Television Commercials."

Which begs the question: How will Santorum supporters react if he falls back to his historical norms? What will they do if somebody besides Rick wins the nomination?

Will they still vote GOP up and down the ticket?

I'm concerned. It's like when Tebow lost in the playoffs. It's an enormous emotional hit to go from being so high, to landing back on earth.

I do not think Santorum is a gaffe machine. He just doesn’t speak like Gingrich. Let’s put it this way. If this were an advanced debate class, Gingrich would be at the head of the class, a classic A+. (And he didn’t have to sleep with the professor to get it.) Romney would be a struggling B-, saying all the right things, but as if someone else wrote it all for him. George Bush would be failing the class, even with the tutoring he’s getting. (Even if he were sleeping with the prof!) But Santorum would be a clean B. Sharp and quick, says the right things. Graded down from an A for some ums and uhs, and for going on a mite too long.

Santorum scares the irreligious, is all. They are afraid he is only about social issues, and they are tricked into thinking that a godless socialist or a man who says he is religious but doesn’t act upon the tenets of his faith would be better.

Or Gingrich is too busy trying to save himself from embarrassment of losing in Georgia. [Last report I saw, GA was about a 3 way tie at this point.]
