“Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima” is often cited as being the most reproduced photograph in history. It is also probably the most parodied image in the world. The “Iwo Jima pose” has become a popular symbol for organizations or movements wishing to convey victory, teamwork, or patriotism. The use of the image has ranged from respectful homage to what some consider offensive misappropriation

What’s ironic is the image that is widely circulated was a ‘parody’ itself. The original flag raising was with a smaller flag, and later they wanted it filmed/photographed with a larger flag.

I always wanted to do one with Jane Fonda, MalcomeX,
John kerry, Ted turner, Ho chi Min and Lenin, raising a rainbow flag with the pole stuck in Uncle Sam’s butt.

That would be a parody right?

I really doubt that is true. But no way to prove it one way are the other.

As I recall the first photo of the Marines was a gung ho photo and was sent back to the States before developing. When the editor called and asked if it was staged Joe Rosenthal said yes. That made for mistaken report that the famous one was staged. The editor and Joe were talking about two different flags and photos. The first flag was taken down to save it from being confiscated by an Admiral from off-shore and Rosenthal took the famous photo as a fleeting after thought.

I got Joe Rosenthal’s address out of the SF phone book back in the 90s and sent him a copy for signature. He sent it back signed.

Yes, my friend and neighbor ``Bernie`` Schryer was one of the ones who helped raise the smaller flag first.

Personally, I’d rather see Uncle Sam sticking a US flagpole up all of their butts in sequence, like a great big shishkabob. But, to each his own. ;-)

Incorrect. James Forrestal wanted the first flag.

In addition, Rosenthal was still walking up Suribachi when the first flag was raised. Lowery passed him on his way down the mountain and told Rosenthal that he had missed the flag raising.

Thanks for the correction. It was based upon my dimming memory from reading “Flags of Our Fathers” when it first came out.
