(Reuters) - Russia warned Israel on Wednesday that attacking Iran would be a disastrous and played down the failure of a U.N. nuclear agency mission to Tehran, saying there is still a chance for new talks over the Iranian atomic program.
"Of course any possible military scenario against Iran will be catastrophic for the region and for the whole system of international relations," Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told a news conference.
It was one of Russia's starkest warnings against resorting to force, an option Israel and the United States have not ruled out if they conclude that diplomacy and increasing sanctions will not stop Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.
"I hope Israel understands all these consequences ... and they should also consider the consequences of such action for themselves," Gatilov said. "I hope a realistic approach will prevail, along with a sensible assessment."

F Russia
Real life is not a video game.
I don’t want a Russian-Iran vs. USA-Israel war.
Ezekial 38 anyone?
I'm not informed about Russia's relationship to Iran. What is Russia's strategic interest (dependency?) in Iran?
There might not be a viable alternative. If Iran develops nukes, Saudi Arabia has already said it will follow suit. The last thing that region needs is WMDs that are 1 coup away from being in the hands of Islamic Jihadist lunatics...
Gog and Magog. It’s coming to a valley in Israel near you soon!
They don’t have much of an Air Force anymore let alone a massive armada of modern tanks. They can only depend on nuclear weapons. That is the bad part since our chicken politicians are dismantling ours.
Conventionally, we can still kick the crap out of both Russia and Iran. Get those F-22s ready if everyone is really ready to rumble.
Been wondering about this myself.
You want that.
Isn’t there also in Revelation or Daniel or Ezekiel about the dragon from the east and the bear from the north descending on Israel?
Unable to find the verse/s, beginning to think I just imagined them.
Saudi Arabia probably already has a lot of nuclear weapons.
As does Pakistan, which is a red carpet sanctuary for a whole lot of terrorist groups.
With all the changes in government in the Middle East, the players are unorganized, struggling, broke and impotent.
No one is going to come to the defense of Iran.
An overwhelming missle and bomb strike would go unanswered.
You want to bundle all historical enemies into one nice neat package.
Sort of like Pakistan.
I'm not an expert either, and I asked the same question about China and Iran. Certainly they couldn't care less about Iran, right? Indeed, doesn't Iran's Islamic militancy encourage seperatists in both Russia and China??
I think it comes down to 1) basic Anti-Americanism and fear of US hegemony. 2) "the USA's loss is my gain" sort of thinking 3) fear that any change in Iran's Gov't will put them into a US "orbit." 4) need for "independent" energy suppliers able to poke the West in the eye.
ah, All I did was ask a question, what is your point?
“And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth. . .”
Looks like swagger, turns into stagger. :)
That’s easy. All we need to do is tell Russia we will not hassle Syria. We will keep NATO from getting involved in Syria. And we will not arm the rebels in Syria. Ask Russia to ask Assad to ask Iran for all the manpower they can send.
In return Iran’s mullahs belong to us after we blow the hell out of their nuclear facilities.
What about Iran, they are quite capable of defending themselves, we aren’t just going to roll our tanks into Tehran, Baghdad style.
