TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is dangling the prospect of gas as low as $2 a gallon if he's elected.
The former House speaker has spoken in the past of gas dropping to $2.50 a gallon under a Gingrich administration. Monday's prediction, coming as Gingrich campaigned in Oklahoma, contrasts sharply with rival Rick Santorum, who told an Ohio audience that big-city Americans should brace themselves for $5-a-gallon gas.
Both candidates are citing new sensitivity over rising pump prices to push for relaxed regulation on domestic oil production.
According to AAA's daily fuel gauge, the national average Monday for a gallon of regular gas was $3.56.
Gingrich and Santorum have been highlighting oil exploration in North Dakota and slamming the Obama administration for delaying a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline.

"With Gingrich policies, what we know is we will dramatically expand our independence in the world market, dramatically expand our capacity to produce energy without regard to our foreign potential enemies and in the process prices will clearly be a lot lower," Gingrich said. "Now, I picked $2.50 as a stabilizing price for capital investment reasons. It could easily go down to $2."
According to AAA's daily fuel gauge, a gallon of regular gas was approaching $4 in some places and even topped it in California.

That was 42 years ago.
Seven or eight years ago gas was around $2, 2.25 a gallon. Now it's TWICE AS MUCH (while everything still costs close to the same, nothing near doubling in price, like gas). Gas prices are soaring for geo-political and environmental reasons manufactured for political expediency.
Other prices have remained relatively stable. Gas has leaped, and always predictably. Increase supply, and the price will go down and the econony will prosper.
Shutting down an economy by fiat intervention is not a test of economic beneficence. Growth is an entirely different matter. Predicting, for political purposes, a fixed price for gas by dint of promised Presidential policy is grandstanding - pure and simple. If you think it is gospel, well, I’m not the only dummy on this thread.

I went to Giant State U, with a degree in Computer Science, and went to mid-sized Private U, with a Masters Degree in a management discipline.
I’ve written nothing on the subject. Al Gore has written a couple of real nifty books on Climate Change (and even managed to go to *gasp* Harvard), and I would feel very comfortable debating client change science with him.
Newt offers solutions and possibilities. Santorum offers nothing.
I see from this thread that the followers of Saint Ricky are very nervous about the possibility that the voters will listen to Newt.
Oh well, Santorum may very well win the nomination, but there will not be any forward movement.
I will thank him for stopping Romney, but will damn him for giving Obama another 4 years.

The only problem is that demand is growing at an increasingly rapid clip because 2 billion Chinese and Indians figured out... “Hey!! We can have cars too!!”, and all the easy-to-get oil has been found. This isn’t like growing corn where you just plow another field.
Also, oil is just increasingly expensive to get out of the ground. Thats going to have a significant impact on how much its worth. There are many reasons why we’re not going back to the old days. An overly intrusive government certainly plays a role, but thats not all of the story.
If you think Newt is our salvation and nobody outside your camp loves America, well, there’s not much I can say about your thinking that you’d process.
Of course, Newt also talks (quite seriously) about colonizing the moon. Sometimes I get the impression the Republican field is the cast of Cheers, and he’s Cliff Clavin.
Newt is not our salvation. Newt at least has a plan, where is Mittens or Santorum. Our Salvation comes from above.
The problem is that America's government is prohibiting it from developing its own energy, among other things. It is MUCH of the story. There are a lot of alternative energies and as long as the free market is able to innovate ways to meet energy needs, energy is never going to be a problem. Human being are probably the single most adaptable creature on planet earth -- by the time we ran out of oil, we'd have figured out a viable alternative.
It's human nature.
Some nation, or alliance of nations, is going to colonize the moon. I'd kinda like it if was the same nation that put the first man on the moon.

Gas was .299 in 1970 and my 50cc motorcycle held 1 gallon. A quarter filled it up and got me around all week.
OBambi is in a very tough spot. He won’t attack Iran because that would cause oil/gas prices to go up and that would doom his re-election chances, and, of course, IT IS ALL ABOUT HIM.
He will have a very tough time controlling Israel because, for some odd reason, they want to live.
OTOH, he hates the oil companies and will plow ahead with additional regulations thus putting added pressure on oil companies to raise prices.
The Dimocrat Senate hates private enterprise and especially oil companies so they’ll have another show trial soon in the bowels of the Senate to paint Shell, et. al. as ogres.

I was brought up in the 50’s. Life was an adventure, impossible things were seen as possible. Almost everything you touch today, came from the dreams of children that grew up and made them real.
We can not go back in time, but we can bring some of the good stuff back and hand it off to our children and grandchildren.
