An adviser to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign says GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum went "well over the line" when he questioned Obama's Christian values.

Robert Gibbs tells ABC's "This Week" that it's time "to get rid of this mindset in our politics that, if we disagree, we have to question character and faith."

The left's manufactured outrage declines to acknowledge the obvious, viz.: Rick Santorum's words were probably not even directed at President Obama's religious beliefs (such as they are).

It is true that the word, "theology," is a combination of the Greek theos (i.e. God) and the Greek logos (i.e. word); so theology, strictly speaking, is the study of the word of God. Which is to say, the study of religion in general.

But the term is sometimes uses a bit more loosely than that. For instance, I have occasionally spoken of the left's almost theological belief that the use of fossil fuels is sinful; and that America should not, therefore, drill for more domestic oil.

In this sense, "theological" simply refers to a broad belief system.

I believe it was in this sense that the term was used by Rick Santorum.
