From what I could gather last night, it was sometime in the early 2000s. He worked for BP in the Yuma area for a short time but left to return to the Chandler PD, then became president of the local police group. He ran for Sheriff in 2008, defeating the long-time sheriff who was quite corrupt; he was also the first elected GOP official in Pinal county in decades, so it was a shock when he actually won. I didn’t move to Maricopa until the summer of 2010, so he already the sheriff at that time. I just assumed he was a native or long-time Zonie, but apparently that’s not the case.
