Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's struggles in Michigan are fueling speculation that Republicans might have to resort to a doomsday scenario and launch a frantic search for a 2012 savior at their nominating convention in late August.
Rare in the modern age of U.S. politics, a "brokered convention" could result in Republicans ditching their current crop of candidates and turning to someone else who they feel would have a better chance of defeating Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.
How did Republicans get to this point? Romney's failure to get conservatives fully behind him and put down yet another challenger in the party - this time it's Rick Santorum - is causing angst in the party.
Many senior Republicans do not think Santorum, a social conservative caught up in the U.S. culture wars over issues like abortion and contraception, has a chance to beat Obama if he wins the party's presidential nomination. (snip*)
Who would Republicans turn to if not Romney or Santorum? Think of two popular governors, Mitch Daniels of Indiana and Chris Christie of New Jersey, or former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, or even U.S. congressman Paul Ryan, author of a budget plan popular with Republicans (snip*)
PALIN OFFERS HELP
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a champion of the conservative Tea Party movement, is making noises about being willing to "help" at a brokered convention. That notion sounds suspiciously like she would love to have her own name thrown into the mix, if even only as a kingmaker.

But more so, Santorum has also a phony conservative in regards to fiscal practices, as well as his actual voting record when he was a Senator.
Most all of the things Santorum has been saying, will provide massive amounts of material for the Left to use against him. Add that to the reality that he is not capable of leading the necessary measures to fix the damage this country faces.
In regards to Romney, he is just not to be trusted. He is a plastic phony who even a 5th grader can see through.
I never thought I would ever welcome a Brokered Convention, but after seeing the current leaders (imposter's) and the results of their pasts, I hope and pray that it will happen. It's either that, or I go 3rd party for the first time in my life.
I love your graphics Frank! Keep up the good work. Now, if you could expose the phony copycat “mee-too” Santorum, you would have a match!
The more I think about a brokered convention, the more I like the idea.
For one thing, it would rob the media of their ability to steer the Obama opposition message wherever *they* want it to go, and (in principle, anyway) restore the ability to frame the anti-Obama message to the opposition party, where it belongs.
Not that the stupid party couldn’t still find a way to screw it all up, but it would give ‘em a fighting chance.
How on earth do they think Romney is going to get conservatives behind him when he failed to do so last time, and when he has such a clear liberal record--including abortion, gay marriage, appointment of flaming activist judges, and all the rest of it?
There is nothing he can do about this obvious record but lie. And his lies are easily exposed.
They just noticed this?
As for Rick's social conservatism being a problem for him, certainly the talking heads will try to make it so. But how do they explain the fact that gay marriage and abortion have never won a popular election, except in sink holes of urban corruption? How do they explain the fact that pro-aborts are forced to lie about what they do, and to pretend to be "pro-choice"? How is it demeaning to women to suggest that maybe they should make their own choices by staying out of bed with predatory men?
Or, if they want contraceptives, maybe they should pay for them, rather than force others to do so. They really aren't very expensive. And if they want to use morning-after pills, they should understand that they are really using an abortificient. That's their choice, but no reason why the federal government should make bishops or Evangelicals pay for it.
“Who would Republicans turn to if not Romney or Santorum? Think of two popular governors, Mitch Daniels of Indiana and Chris Christie of New Jersey, or former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, or even U.S. congressman Paul Ryan, author of a budget plan popular with Republicans (snip*) “
That should finally drive a stake through the heart of the party once and for all. Idiots.
It will be a cold day in hell, before Santorum could even come close to beating Obama. If nothing else, at least give it some serious thought. (Something that is severely lacking around here lately.)
Choosing a Conservative would point to a viable future
Choosing someone like Jeb Bush would kill the party. With fire.
Thanks PSYCHO-FREEP.
This should scare enough fence-sitters into voting for Romney.
And use it they will, with great success and affect.
I was thinking more on the line of Newt Gingrich. He is the only man with the talent and brain power to fix this mess. On top of already having a brilliant plan laid out, he knows exactly when and where to start.
They might even pick Boehner or Mitch McConnell or anyone else they feel who’s turn it is.
They could even run McCain again.
I don’t like any of the 4 running, but we could do worse.
Not at all. The convention would bring Sarah Palin back into the mix and the choices would also include Newt Gingrich.
(Check the history of the Brokered Convention.)
You might not have a choice. They chaotic condition of this party will dictate it for us.
Ineligible RINO Backstabber:
"In 1995 I supported Democrats.
Then, I so hated Reagan.
THAT and RomneyCARE make ME 'conservative'.
"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party
over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged
to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.
Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates
wouldn't make any sense at all.""
-- President Ronald Reagan
Who are you working for - Democrats or RINO's?
If Newt's a real Catholic, he believes the same things.
Do you have any idea what Mitt does inside the Temple?
I prefer Newt over those left, but the chances that a brokered convention would give either of those two a serious look are about the same as Buddy Rower winning outright by June 1st.
