Could Obama healthcare law force you to buy a car? Photo 2:39pm EST

By James Vicini

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An attorney challenging President Barack Obama's landmark healthcare law before the U.S. Supreme Court said on Thursday that Congress could require Americans to buy a car or other product if people were compelled to obtain medical insurance.

But a former Obama administration attorney dismissed those concerns, calling them "absurd hypotheticals," and defended the insurance purchase requirement in the 2010 law as part of a comprehensive scheme to address a national problem of soaring healthcare costs.

At a briefing sponsored by SCOTUSblog, a web site that follows the Supreme Court, and Bloomberg Law, a unit of media giant Bloomberg, attorneys Paul Clement and Neal Katyal previewed the main arguments that will be made next month when the Supreme Court considers the healthcare challenge, which centers on the reach of Congress' power under the Constitution to regulate interstate commerce.

“absurd hypotheticals,” my eye.

In our lawyer-infested government, every bad precedent is justification for something worse.

Why not force folks to buy internet and a computer to access information?

And our legal system is in place to handle the “absurd hypotheticals”. Justice is blind and all that, right?

My life experience tells me that if someone says: “Don’t worry about that, I’ll never do that to you”. That’s the time to worry, because they’re telling you what’s coming.

Why couldn’t the Obama administration say anyone with government healthcare must drive a car with certain characteristics, (5 star crash ratings, low emissions, etc.)

There are good attorneys.

Below that are croooked attorneys.

Below that are sleazy slimy bottom of the barrel crooked attorneys.

At the bottom are “former Obama administration” attorneys.

Shove your lies up your smelly Obama, oh “former Obama administration attorney”.

While you’re shoving it...have you paid your taxes yet, sleazebag?

Obamacare is “to address a national problem of soaring healthcare costs.”

Sad because government intervention is the only thing that will prevent health care and health insurance from becoming more affordable in response to market forces.

Obamacare is not even remotely designed to address costs. It is designed to give soup to nuts health insurance to all non working Americans, at the expense of those who work.

Costs would be cut through competition, which Obamacare eliminates.

“Why not force folks to buy internet ...?”

You’re already buying millions of people cell phones. And everyone MUST have free contraceptives, want them or not. We paid to destroy old cars rather than let poor people buy them.

Leftist policies are insane and govt makes everything it touches more expensive.

How is the government forcing me to buy a car an absurd hypothetical?

Think about it. Just 4 years ago no one would have ever thought the government would mandate I buy health insurance. In fact, I believe Obama was against a mandate...yeah he even said,

"A mandate means that in some fashion, everybody will be forced to buy health insurance. ... But I believe the problem is not that folks are trying to avoid getting health care. The problem is they can't afford it. And that's why my plan emphasizes lowering costs."

And then the votes were counted...

"I have come to that conclusion," Obama said. "During the campaign I was opposed to this idea because my general attitude was the reason people don't have health insurance is not because they don't want it, it's because they can't afford it. And if you make it affordable, then they'll come. I am now in favor of some sort of individual mandate as long as there's a hardship exemption."

So changing his mind on forcing us to buy a Government Motors Car could very well happen.

Here’s what’s coming, if the safety Nazis have their way.

Once Obama”care” is fully implemented, the nanny state will have say in any decision that impacts or could potentially impact your health (i.e. their expenses).

They will force you to buy a car as opposed to a motorcycle, because motorcycles are just too darn dangerous, even if they do get much better fuel economy.

The irony is that the CAFE requirements are making cars smaller and deadlier all the while.

Absolutely correct. Yet the pro-Obamacare propagandists continue to spread the lie that it will cut costs. God, will this nightmare ever end?

If the federal government can force an American citizen to buy healthcare, theoretically, the federal government can force an American citizen to buy anything. And then, theoretically, there are no limits whatsoever to the reach of federal power.

You can thank the socialists on the D side and the drug warriors on the R side for this.

Forget the car.

They can force you to buy solar panels for your house!

Absolutely. Statistically speaking, safer cars should reduce injuries or their severity. Can't afford a safer vehicle? Mass transit for you, comrade! Be safe!

What will be the libtard's solution to soaring energy costs? Forcing people to but Chevy Volts or some suitable substitute.

They won’t force you to buy a car. They will force to buy insurance and the insurance company to give you a car.
