I am a 50 year old retired Navy officer (USS Harlan County LST-1196 was my first ship).
That's how a commanding officer speaks.

Now, either you're Vernon C. Smith or some other commanding officer (as indicated by your comment) or you never were the commanding officer of that ship and you only served aboard her. Which is it?

So was she your first duty station or did you command her?
Were you a petty officer or a commissioned officer?

I made it to petty officer myself during my short stint.

She was the first ship I served on. I retired as a Commander.

Yes, I did serve and yes, it was different, though not extensive. Gator Navy mostly. LHA class. Too prim and proper for my tastes.
Being TAD to the Officer's Mess and seeing them eat off of actual china and with real silverware while the enlisted men ate off of plastic cafeteria trays and stamped utensils kind of ruined it for me. I didn't stay in long.

I liked the Gator Navy - it always struck me as the blue collar navy. Best time of my career being in charge of 1st Division.

I scored very well on my ASVAB and I was approached to go nukes during A school. I turned it down. I went to boot and A school in Orlando and the glow worms were already there giving me counsel not to do so.
The funny thing is I eventually wound up being a snipe in the civilian world after all.

Nukes are a strange breed for sure - failing college calculus was probably the smartest thing I ever did. When I was commissioned they were strong arming ensigns to be surface nukes.

Me too. Spent a lot of time with some good jarheads while TAD. Enjoyed the people, enjoyed the places I got to visit...didn't like the Navy itself so much, as noted.

Ah, you made it to the West Coast. Quite a difference between the two coasts from what I heard.

I asked for the West Coast and ended going a lot further west than I intended. Spend four years in Japan - Sasebo and then Yoko.

When I was commissioned they were strong arming ensigns to be surface nukes.
I was unable to go subs 'cause of my deaf ear so they pushed me for carrier duty. No thanks.

Looks like you started out on the East Coast since you were on the USS Harlan County and she was out of Norfolk.

Looks like somebody has gone through quite a bit of effort...

WOW! How does a twenty year man (you said you're retired) manage to get so few duty stations? Four ships and shore duty and that's it?! That sure was one long shore duty tour in Little Creek.
