State-run newspapers splashed accusations of a US plan to spread “anarchy” in Egypt across their front pages on Tuesday, escalating a dispute Washington says must be resolved to ensure their continued military cooperation.
General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the (dis) Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a US Senate hearing on Tuesday he had tried to convince Egypt’s ruling generals of the gravity of the case.
While the White House announced plans on Monday to keep aid to Egypt level with that of recent years, a State Department spokeswoman said that “if we cannot resolve the current impasse it could have implications for this relationship and for our ability to disburse this money.”
