President Obama sent Congress a $3.8T budget proposal Monday that he says is a reflection of shared responsibility and aims to pour billions of dollars in increased spending into the down economy to inject some immediate life there.
Appearing at Northern Virginia Community College, Obama who continued to hammer home his policies aimed at helping the middle class said that while the budget he put forward included some difficult cuts, it aims to help the economic recovery accelerate.
The economy is growing stronger, recovery is speeding up and the last thing we can afford to do right now is to go back to the very policies that got us into this mess in the first place, Obama said. We cant afford it. The last thing we need is for Washington to stand in the way of Americas comeback.
Obamas proposal includes $350 billion in stimulus measures and $476 billion for transportation and infrastructure that would be partially paid for by savings from the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It would reduce projected deficits by $3 trillion over 10 years. That reduction would be achieved through $1.5 trillion in new taxes, including the end of Bush-era tax rates for families with income above $250,000 annually; $800 billion in savings from the end of the two wars; $278 billion in mandatory spending cuts; and $360 billion in Medicare and other entitlement cuts.
Yikes, thats 4 million, not 20 million.
... Obama:"The president also has the prerogative to obtain advice that will assist him in carrying out his constitutional responsibilities, and do so not only from executive branch officials and employees outside the White House, but also from advisers within it."
"Legislative efforts that significantly impede the president's ability to exercise his supervisory and coordinating authorities or to obtain the views of the appropriate senior advisers violate the separation of powers by undermining the president's ability to exercise his constitutional responsibilities and take care that the laws be faithfully executed. Therefore, the executive branch will construe section 2262 not to abrogate [Repeal a law, right, or formal agreement] these presidential prerogatives."
The President claimed as he tossed a bite of pierogi into his mouth:
It is his "presidential prerogatives" to ignore or choose not to comply [example] in the 2011 spending package that would ban several top White House advisory posts through salary, who were never vetted in the first place.
[pierogi added for visual effect only]
And the GOP decides to fight over unemployment extention then caves. What does that tell the average voter?
1) Congres is too extreme
2) obama is right and the GOP is wrong.
That’s how they see it. The GOP should learn how to choose their fights. Then again, it’s my belief the GOP wants obama to win.
