US Disarmament Expert: 'The Risk that Nuclear Weapons Will Be Used Is Growing'
Spiegel ^ | 02/10/2012

Posted on 02/11/2012 10:21:46 PM PST by Milagros

Anxieties are mounting as nuclear weapons make their way into unstable regions. In a SPIEGEL ONLINE interview, US disarmament expert Richard Burt discusses the growing risk of their use, why allowing Iran to get the bomb could trigger a Sunni-Shiite arms race and how an attack could make citizens demand a police state. [...] The problem with Iran is not that there is necessarily going to be an Israeli-Iranian nuclear conflict. In fact, I think the Israelis would probably deter the Iranians from using nuclear weapons. But the danger is that once Iran acquires these weapons, there's the potential for a cascade of other countries to do the same. Turkey, for example, would be very likely to acquire its own nuclear weapons if Iran went that way; Egypt and Saudi Arabia, too. What we could see is a dangerous Sunni-Shite nuclear arms race -- and that is very worrisome.

Well, I guess we ought to be first then.

Oops. I guess we already have.

Hear that world?

We are the only nuclear power in the world that has used nukes, and refuses to rule out "first use" in the future.

Come and get 'em.

In 1946,in a closed congressional hearing, J. Robert Oppenheimer was asked “whether three or four men couldn’t smuggle units of an atomic bomb into a city and blow up the entire city.” The father of the atomic bomb said “Of course it could be done.” When a nervous senator then asked how such a weapon smuggled in a crate or in a suitcase could be detected, Oppenheimer said “With a screwdriver.”

With all my heart I hope that “ANOTHER” nuclear exchange in that region will never materialize and hopefully the Jews will see to it that there will be no repeat of such an event but just in case it does it certainly would not be the first time for this to happen as the last nuclear exchange in that region took place on the Sinai Peninsular approximately 4000 years ago or 2024 BC and found its way in to history books as the event which became known as Sodom and Gomorrah. (Isn’t it amazing how history attempts to repeat itself?)

The winds carry the radioactive cloud to Sumer. People die a terrible death , animals perish, the water is poisoned, the soil become barren. Sumer and it’s great civilization lie prostrate. Its legacy passes to Abraham’s son he begets-at age 100 - a legitimate heir: Isaac

And by the way, the remaining scars from this first nuclear exchange in that region can still be seen from a satellite photograph.

The question remains will mankind learns from its mistakes or are we condemned to repeat them until we learn from history.

We are very close to a regional war that can easily turn into a global nuclear war.Russia has already taken the Iranian side. Relations between Russia and Persia date back to the 16th century.Russia and Iran also share a common interest in limiting the political influence of the United States in Central Asia

Generally speaking, Spiegel is junk. A leftist bent sensationalist smear magazine not worried to much about the truth.

However, occasionally they write something like this.

It is real simple. The technology and access in materials, engineering (mechanical/electrical) and physics involved in making “the bomb” is readily available top nations today. Even a retarded nation like North Korea has been able to scrape together 6 - 8 nukes. Likewise is the case for the delivery systems. The end of the cold war, dual use technologies, the access to information and multicultural societies where large numbers of foreign students study in the West or are employed in high tech industries etc simply makes the information at our finger tip. It was a marvel in 1945, but today Iran can do it too. It's difficult to stop.

We need to try to contain this, but we for sure need to devise defense systems to counter this threat.

MDA in the future, bad mouthed by such idiots as the ones writing for “Der Spiegel” won't be such a dumb, destabilizing, arms race starting, system devised against imaginary threats in the future.

The problem with system like this is that you can't pull them out of your ass in a short time. Like a carrier, they take time to build. If in 2013 something pops up, it's to late to start scrambling then because it'll take a while before we can even get something on its feet.

There has been several people in the United States who have sucessfully designed a “private” atomic bomb using “off the shelf” parts.

In my opinion, a nuke will be used to trigger a Electromagnetic pulse device over the United States. An electromagnetic pulse weapon detonated 300 miles above Kansas would affect most of the U.S. It is known that China is developing such a weapon and will give that technology to Iran.

I agree. The EMP attack will be precede the first strike. The Electro Magnetic Pulse will radiate out across North America and Western Europe, collecting on power transmission lines and communication antennas. For a fraction of a second, the EMP spikes the power grid and receiving antennas with a huge surge of voltage.

Marvelous. For 17 years we’ve been sitting around on our butts watching this happen. Incidentally, there are now reports that Saudi Arabia is negotiating with Pakistan to purchase nukes off the shelf should Iran go nuclear. Saudi Arabia and Iran with nukes. What a nightmare. In many ways they will dominate the world. They are like a man holed up in a room with a knife at a woman’s throat. But they also both sponsor Jihad and proselytize the worst forms of Islam with billions of dollars around the globe. Meanwhile the world is dependent on their oil, like a crack addict depends on his dealer.

This is the greatest disaster of our lifetime if it comes to pass.

Iran will test its first nuke by putting it on a missile aimed at Israel and precipitate an Israeli nuclear response. Pakistan's nukes are virtually in the hands of terrorists already and at least one American city will be the target of a terrorist nuke in the next five years. Odumbo's policies have only encouraged this to happen and if an American city is nuked I would expect Obama to capitulate and call for help from the UN rather than take any military action.

What is needed is some variation of the MAD policy of the Cold War. A nuclear attack on the US by Islamic terrorists should be met with a nuclear response from the US aimed at the heart of Islam with nuclear strikes on Mecca and Medina. I have heard that Israel has such an Armageddon plan.

MAD won't work with fundamental Muslims who are willing to die killing us Infidels, when they believe they will get an eternal reward with God(Allah)
We have seen plenty of examples of that recently.
Killing us Infidels is not their idea, it is God's idea.(Allah)- Tom
