Another Romney nightmare? Ron Paul poses major challenge in Maine caucuses.

Texas on the Potomac frequently shares the best national political content from the Texas Tribune. Today, we offer you analysis by the Trib’s David Muto.

One roadblock stands between Mitt Romney and a much-needed comeback this weekend: Ron Paul.

Romney, looking to stop the bleeding after losing losing three straight contests to Rick Santorum on Tuesday, has turned his focus to Maine, which will announce the results of its week long caucuses on Saturday.

But Romney, who won the state handily in 2008, faces stiff competition from Paul, the only candidate who had campaigned in the state before its caucuses began last weekend. And, as The Associated Press notes, Romney has spent few advertising dollars there —

“Romney has been the presumed front-runner, which means he’s walking around with a big target on his back,” said Seth Masket, an associate professor of political science at the University of Denver.

Paul, who will visit the state today for the second time in recent weeks, said Thursday on CNN that he expected to fare well in the state. ”I think we have a chance to do that,” Paul said when asked if he thought he’d win the state. “And I’ll be up there and struggling up to the last minute. But every time I’ve been up there so far, it has been wonderful. And I’m so pleased that they’re very receptive to the ideas of liberty, and I’m cautiously optimistic about Saturday.”

If Romney loses to Paul in a New England state, it’s over. The establishment better start dusting off Jeb Bush.

Only in Maine, the home of liberals Snowe and Collins could these two Jackass’s be on top.

If Pual has a chance to knock Milt out in Maine, that’s great. I guess for the one and only time ever, I will say:

Go Paul!

Not to get off subject, but I read on another conservative site that, Freerepublic was censoring anyone who supports Romney, and I hope those rumors are proved to be socialist just being themselves, otherwise I may have to reevaluate my conservative position when a site might due what's accused of being no different than what a socialist rag should do. I hope those accusations are unfounded.

Shouldn’t Maine’s two RINOettes, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, be publicly supporting Mitt as he struggles against the crazy radical Ron Paul? Apparently, they had to stay home to wash their hair.

Ha! You’re right. Ron Paul FTW over Romney!

The mainstream media will be apoplectic! Just to see the talking heads in “nervous-breakdown mode” would be worth every second!

I say you put your money where your garbled verbiage is.

Go ahead and praise Romney.

Let's see what happens...

Well they do have that independent governor...Paul might tap into the same sentiment that elected him. Anyway better Paul than Romney.

Romney is not a Conservative. In keeping with the support of Conservative ideals and not spreading the RINO manure, this site does whatever the hell the owner of the site wishes to do. Romney would be more at home at DU than FR - trust me! I hope you have more intelligence than your narrow little post implies.

I think Joshua may have already gone too far with his socialist rag comment and is it due, do or dew. LOL!

Romney is not a Conservative.

Is that so?

In his CPAC address, he described himself as "severely conservative" and even used the word "conservative" about 599 times in his 20-minute speech.

So, that is what he is saying this year? Calling yourself something over and over again does not turn you into one. I'm an M&M - If I state that 599 times in a row will I become an M&M? He is playing to the crowd he is trying to sell his brand of moderated rubbage to - it's called politics. What actions has he accomplished over his political carreer that make him a Conservative?

I'll give you a hint: not a damn thing.

John King on CNN said two weeks ago at least that Paul would win Maine. For pete’s sake the guy hasn’t been anywhere else for the last month. Probably has every college kid in every NE state coming to vote illegally.

Well noob, it sounds like you’ve been hanging out at the Romney sites. They by definition are not conservative since Romney is a flaming lib.

Stick around here and you’ll learn he’s a socialist from birth, being the son of a liberal and Reagan hater. Free Republic is a conservative site so there is no pimping that socialist Romney here. If you want to reconsider your conservative position and go full flaming pinko that is your business. You may want to check your spelling and “due” your “do” on some other site. But don’t expect that socialist’s position to be encouraged here. We don’t allow prostitutes for commies to post here very long.

Maybe you can stick around if you go back on your meds, learn to spell, and decide to join the conservatives.

But it is so pleasant not to encounter rombot poison on this one website. After all, Rombot poison is all over the internet and readily available to anyone who wants to read it. So my question is, do you, as a conservative, believe in freedom of association or not, especially with a privately owned website?
