Top Republican at CPAC: Jeb Bush could emerge as nominee at a brokered convention

Al Cardenas, head of the American Conservative Union, has said that Republican turmoil might lead to a brokered convention in which Jeb Bush, former Florida governor, would emerge as a “possible alternative” party nominee.

Mr Cardenas, who is running this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), a gathering in Washington of some 10,000 conservatives, told MailOnline that it was not certain that one of the four current Republican candidates would emerge victorious.

His comments came as Republicans fretted publicly about the perceived weaknesses of Mitt Romney, the establishment choice and frontrunner, Rick Santorum, surprise winner in three states on Tuesday, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul.

Jeb Bush, former Florida governor and younger brother of President George W. Bush, has repeatedly said he will not run in 2012. He is one of a number of senior figures who disappointed activists and party officials alike by staying on the sidelines.

“We'll know more in the next few weeks,” said Mr Cardenas. “The pressure’s already been on Mitt Romney to close the sale... and he hasn’t.” A split verdict on “Super Tuesday” on March 6th, when 10 states vote, could lead to a surprise at the Republican convention in Tampa in August, he suggested.

Not only are you correct but that was the way the nominee was selected for every party until probably the last half of the 20th century. Conventions choose the nominee not primaries and before that they didn’t even have conventions. Primaries are new to the game.

This would be the outcome of a brokered convention. Anyone thinking this would be good thing is delusional.

Yes but anyone who is knowledgeable about American political history can tell how much of a disaster we can inflict on ourselves. It has been done repeatedly through one gimmick after the other.

A brokered convention is neither anything new nor anything to particularly fear. But the point is that will have to happen if no one wins the nomination in the primaries which is appearing very likely.

It would mean, however, that Mitt could not win it outright and probably not at all if he doesn’t. So that, to me, is a good thing. I doubt that a brokered convention would turn to Mitt.

“pound sand”

OK but only if you get your head out of it. Otherwise I might knock some sense into it. This would lead to all manner of confusion for you.

I would just as soon run Laura as to run Jeb.

The only thing wrong with Jeb is his last name. It won’t have recovered from the Left eight yrs of smear, lies and character assassination for another four yrs.

There aren’t many (if any) as knowledgeable about American political history as you.

I am just an amateur unlike some we have around here such as LS. I have to confess that I had more interest in European history (even Greek and Roman history) than American until the last ten yrs. when I began an in depth study of the Revolutionary period. This was the result of an interest stimulated by discussions on FR.

Though there are a lot of sorry stories and revolting episodes it does put a lot of things happening today in perspective. For instance, the Class Warfare card is one which has been played throughout our history since the rise of Jefferson and the Democrats. And we have always had a mendacious media which makes up lies out of whole cloth. Voter fraud has been endemic throughout our history starting with Aaron Burr and Tammany Hall in NYC. At one time some states even allowed illegal immigrants to legally vote. As bad as things seem today we have survived worse. I realize these are slender grounds for hope but they are at least there.

Bismarck once said “There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children and the United States of America.” When you study American history you have to agree.

Fair enough. Do you think though, that we have ever had a radical of the sort that Obama is, convinced as he is, that the country has been on a wrong path from the getgo, and dedicated to converting us to some kind of a neo-marxist utopia?

As flawed as our system is (see the unalterable changes that FDR blessed us with), can we ever recover from Obama?

No, we have never had a radical Leftist like Urkel. FDR was a card-carrying capitalist in comparison to this guy. FDR did not go into office with a preconceived plan to destroy the US (for fairness) but created programs designed to alleviate a gigantic problem. He was also facing pressure from the Left in that the Communist and Socialist parties were growing and his fellow Democrat, Huey “Kingfish” Long, was promoting his own Share the Wealth program, “Every Man a King”. Look into the characters who propose such programs and almost every one is corrupt and a crook. I don’t believe that can be said about FDR but his programs he believed would save capitalism.

I truly do not know if we can recover from allowing women to vote. That meant the majority of the electorate tended toward big government and socialism/welfarism. But I won’t be around to watch the final collapse unfortunately my sons will be.

Look here kid, you are deluded if you think the voter is in control of this election.
Also, insulting me will get you nowhere and threatening me may bring legal action and or violence your way - so knock off the all knowing, all seeing tough guy bullshit.

Another thing, I am not registered Republican and owe the GOP nothing.

America will not survive another four years of Obama and may not survive with Romney or Bush neither one can/will slam the brakes on and turn the bus around.

and another thing, neither Romney or Bush can beat Obama as both have instituted policies contrary to the conservative philosophy.
Mitt has baggage from his days as Gov and so does Bush

Oh great.

That way we can have more uncontrolled illegal invasion of the southwest US, and more American jobs sent to China.

Gosh, that would be keen.

One of the things that soured me on the Bush clan was when Barbara bad-mouthed Sarah Palin.

She took a cheap shot, and it stunned me.

Then I see Jeb and Old Dad sitting and schmoozing with Obama, kinda soured me on the whole clan.

Funny but I don’t recall the Old Bag running for anything so who cares what she thinks.

As Vito Corleone says “keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”

But it doesn’t matter anyway since there won’t be a Bush on the ballot anywhere for anything for at least four yrs.

What a little pussy you are. I never “threatened” you at all merely told you that should I take your advice and “pound sand” for YOUR OWN SAKE I urged you to get your head out of the way so that I wouldn’t harm your delicate self since your head is obviously IN THE SAND.

Where did I ever say I was a “tough” guy? I’m an old man and far from tough. Nor am I “all seeing” but can see well enough to see through the crap you are peddling.

You don’t have to convince ME that it is going to take a long time to “turn the bus” around and we may not have enough time to do it. THAT I agree with.

I think just about anyone can beat Obama.

And the voters are as much in charge of this election as they have ever been. It should be obvious that most of the elections in our history the voters had almost NO real knowledge of what the candidates stood for OR the ability to choose candidates by their vote in any way since they didn’t even HAVE primaries. Primaries are a fairly recent political phenomenon in American history.

If a candidate could concoct a novel and catchy slogan or come up with an appealing image that was generally good enough to get elected.

Candidates were typically chosen by political parties in the states and at conventions where the average schmoe was never seen or heard.
