Why do these stories always say ‘one of the most influential evangelical leaders’ and you’ve never heard of the guy?

Probably because you aren't in their flock or watch their TV program or get their newsletter. Evangelicals are highly decentralized. I doubt non-Catholics (or most Catholics!) could name 1 US Cardinal - or even their local bishop. Heck, I have a hard time remembering who's a cardinal these days.

I've only heard of Land because he opines on politics from time to time.

Hey, I’m just a dim-witted Catholic and I’ve not only heard of, but loved and admired Richard Land for years. Proud to have him as an ally. And now I want to hear from Al Mohler!

Lance Berkman is but Albert Pujols and Tony LaRussa no longer are. Don't blame you for not keeping up.
