(CBS News) J.C. Penney is trying to rebuild its customer base with help from a new spokeswoman, Ellen DeGeneres. But a group called One Million Moms is accusing the company of "jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon."
DeGeneres responded to the group on her TV show Wednesday, saying, "I'm happy about (being the spokesperson) J.C. Penney is happy about it. But there's this group called One Million Moms that is not happy about it. And normally I try not to pay attention to my haters, but this time I'd like to talk about it because my haters are my motivators. This organization doesn't think I should be the spokesperson because I am gay. So for those of you tuning in for the first time, I'm gay. I hope you were sitting down. ... So they wanted to get me fired, and I'm proud and happy to say that J.C. Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson."
In a statement last week, J.C. Penney said it stands behind its partnership the talk show host.
On "CBS This Morning," Thursday, J.C. Penney chief executive officer Ron Johnson, said the company "shares the same values" as DeGeneres and that the decision to have her as a spokesperson was a "no-brainer."
"We don't look at it like a controversy. One of the great things about America is people can speak their mind. And you know, the organization that believes one thing has spoken and it was great to see Ellen share her views yesterday. And we stand squarely behind Ellen as our spokesperson and that's a great thing. Because she shares the same values that we do in our company. Our company was founded 110 years ago on the golden rule, which is about treating people fair and square, just like you would like to be treated yourself. And we think Ellen represents the values of our company and the values that we share."
You also just described a Mr. Jerry Sandusky, former employee and same-sex rapist of little boys of PSU.
Her first sitcom was hysterical. I used to laugh until I cried it was so funny. But when she came out, the show suddenly changed fron a sitcom to a soap box for the lesbian lifestyle, and that’s when it lost ratings and I stopped watching.
Sure, JC Penny’s is free to hire Ellen. Consumers are also free to object, organize boycotts and not visit their stores if they don’t want to feed the CEO’s limo liberal cause of radical social engineering.
Corporations used to know that it was not to their advantage to isolate or shrink their American consumer base by engaging in the radical Left’s social engineering and political activities. They knew what is popular with their elitist limo mob, is not necessiarly popular with mainstream America. The CEO would have been fired for causing a polarizing controversy that is not in the interest of the corporation’s public image for it’s consumer base.
Big headed globalism has made for a culture of radical aggression - elitism - in Corporations. They have been able to insult and rip off Americans because they don’t depend upon American workers and consumers and they are also legally free to do it. Ultimately, it will all backfire and lead to failure - like liberalism always does. There is no business sense in running polarizing radical politics out of Corporate offices.
I have worked at JCP for nearly three years now. It is the same as any other corporation, with mandatory classes that emphasize diversity and sensitivity to “others” and has a zero tolerance policy for anyone who does not comply with their idea of tolerance.
Ellen Degeneres was chosen for two reasons. She is the most popular daytime personality on TV, hands down and those are the moms the company wants shopping regularly. And she used to work for the company when she was a teen.
To Ron Johnson, that is the perfect match.
I am not a fan, though it seems that Ellen has done some generous things over the years that make people see her as a good person. I am not impressed, it’s easy to do these things when you are famous and have companies willing to pony up goods and services for the free publicity. Like most “stars”, using their fame to get others to donate, without giving of their own wealth.
Those of us who are just the peons in the trenches at penney’s are skeptical about all the changes. Time will tell. We were not asked our opinions on anything and if the company suffers so do we.
I am seriously considering a move, but in Vegas, there are not a lot of jobs up for grabs right now, especially for those who have no specialized training or a college degree.
I don’t blame anyone for choosing not to shop there because of Ellen, it’s their right, but I need this job and walking away because of Ellen is not an option, until and unless another one that pays as well, and has the flexibility of schedule comes along.
I'm not running JCP, am I? Don't be a jerk.
I never go there but I will make an effort ot let others know about their pro homo agenda.
As for Ellen, ARF, she uses her show to push her strap on agenda
Worse than any spokesperson, is JCP’s latest commercial with the screamers, so annoying. To think that some high priced ad people thought that is a good commercial.
Years ago JCP had a back to school ad, a respectable teenage girl getting ready to go to school. Mom shouts your not going to school like that! Many quick shots of available clothing. Teenage girl now wearing low cut jeans, tight top etc. Mom now happy.
Ellen was outed, she was trying to keep it private. When it reached a certain point, being an honest person, she conceded, "Yes I am Lebanese." At that point it was the elephant in the room and she would speak about it; again, she is honest to a fault. She has not, to my knowledge, conducted herself in a manner that could be construed as a spokesperson or advocate. Hard to ignore or not, publicity has always been forced upon her, not vice versa. The charachters she played in her sitcoms were kind, generous, helpful, simple people who represented everything parents should be trying to teach their children. In both cases, external forces perverted the situation to highlight the gay issue.
I would like to see as much effort put forth by the media to publicize her generosity and kindness. That doesn't fit the template though, or serve anyones agenda.
yea ,I mean there wasn’;t any other women about , I mean after all she is a talentless, liberal pro homosexual agenda woman, who uses her show to fool the sheep .
I’ve tried to watch her as the wife has and even the MIL has now stopped watching her.
The bottom line will tell the tale.
I know you don't, because she is gay. It doesn't matter that she is charitable to the less fortunate, that she never has an unkind word to say unless she's been attacked, that she is honest to a fault, that she cares for her family or any other of the litany of things that point to her as being a good person. She is gay so she is EVIL.
Yes you are entitled to your opiinion and when you express it, others are entitled to judge you by it. I would far prefer my children look past her sexuality and learn from all of Ellen's positives than learn from the bigoted opinions you express. Of course, that is just my opinion.
Thank you for giving the perspective of someone that works there. Good luck to you.
So, people who don't want militant homosexuality pushed on their children are "bigots"?
You sure do sound like some kinda liberal, pro-homosexual troll. Or are you just one of the godless anarchists masquerading as a “libertarian”?
We don’t need some lezbo apologist around here. I do not care how nice, generous, or kind Ellen is. That is not the issue. The issue is the social re-engineering underway. I do not want to feel harassed into accepting a sexual perverison, which is exactly how I feel these days.
As a Christian, I believe that homosexuality is a sin. A terrible, terrible sin. I have a right to religious freedom, and I don’t appreciate having my beliefs questioned or ridiculed by a department store.
I’ve seen pictures and video of her dancing with female guests, and it creeps me out.
You’re full of it.
Some people love their children, and don’t want them lured into a harmful lifestyle. Some people just want to be popular, and don’t want to tell their children anything that might disrupt that relationship. If you love your children, you’ll tell them the truth.
Like you, I’m not going to base decisions about where I shop, what movies I see, etc. on someone’s sexual orientation. If Tony Randall was gay, should I have avoided his movies? Should I have kept my daughter from watching “Finding Nemo”?
Prayers for you.
We know that Satan often wraps his ugliness in pretty packaging, and makes things seem not as bad as they truly are. The secular humanist agenda that surrounds your workplace right now is evil. May St Michael, along with your own Holy Angel, protect you, and may Our Lady give you the strength & courage to be a good witness for her Son.
