AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian forces bombarded opposition-held neighborhoods of the city of Homs with rocket and mortar fire on Thursday, activists said, as divided world powers struggled to find a way to end the violence.

The United Nations chief condemned the ferocity of the government assault on Homs, heart of a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad that broke out nearly a year ago and is getting bloodier by the day.

Some highlights from the lengthy article.....

"I fear that the appalling brutality we are witnessing in Homs, with heavy weapons firing into civilian neighborhoods, is a grim harbinger of things to come," U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told reporters after briefing the Security Council.

Things to come? It's already happened. Under Hafez Assad, the town of Hama, up the road from Homs was shelled in 1982.

Foreign ministers of the Arab League, which the U.N.'s Ban said was planning to revive an observer mission it suspended last month because of the violence, are due to meet in Cairo on Sunday.

So, they ended their mission because it got too violent. Now, the violence increases and they want to come back? They make no sense.

The Kremlin said Medvedev told Erdogan the search for a solution should continue but that foreign interference was not an option.

Same old Russia. Still Soviets underneath it all.

never rule anything out in a situation like this," [White House spokesman Jay] Carney said. "But we are pursuing a path that includes isolating and pressuring the Assad regime so that it stops its heinous slaughtering of its own people."

How's that "pressure" working so far with Syria, North Korea, Pakistan, and Iran? Feckless bunch.

U.N. Condemns "Appalling Brutality"

Everyone in opposition to the Assad Regime will be dead by the end of next week, but they can be comforted in this condemnation issued by the U.N., cause that is all the help they are going to get from that organization.

WTF Obama? You can give guns to the GD drug cartels but not to the Syrian resistance fighters? Send them guns, ammo, anti-tank mines, and whatever else they need to have a fair fight. ARM THE SYRIAN RESISTANCE NOW!!!

After Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov met with Assad yesterday, all hell broke loose. Lavrov apparently told Assad to "git 'er done!" And Assad, in turn, ordered his military full speed ahead. Having watched many videos via Al Gezeera, the intensity, duration, and frequency of the bombardments have increased exponentially since this meeting.

120 MikeMikes. SP Guns and the ubiquitous T-62/T-72 series of tanks and of course BMPs. And Homs is not the only city getting plastered...

This morning there are reports Assad is using aerial artillery to crush his opponents.

Don’t forget all the pressure the WH is going to put on Assad. That’ll be comforting, as well.

That's the wrong answer. Iran is actively intervening. An enemy of my enemy is my friend. Arm the resistance now. John McCain has never been more right.

No not when your looking at a continuation of the "arab spring'.....When, has any country of muslim received help from the United States and then acted as a friend?

You can save their ass, you bribe them all you want but in the end they will still hate us.

it's time for them to sort it out.

I agree, send the towel heads only lice powder.

If asshat is overthrown, the mooselimb terrorists will end up in power, if anyone doesn't believe it, look at egypt and lybia.

I'm rooting for asshat to kill as many future terrorists as he can before he gets killed.

Islam is in a declared war against the infidels {that is any non-mooselimb} and the only way to win the war, is destroy all of the terrorists.

They should have been eradicated through out history because while we fail to listen to and believe them, they have consistently told us their intentions.

Their koran is filled from end to end with their game plan, but if you read it and believe it, the only solution is one that is so repugnant, that most people can't stomach the idea. See my tagline.

We should provide them with all the small arms and ammo they can absorb, and help them kill each other. Less to nuke later that way.

Three quick thoughts:

1. The Iran-Imam Obama sponsored “Arab Spring” was carefully staged to install the Imam’s fellow radical Islamists in poer in country’s whose leaders were previously too friendly to the US.

2. Assad is a fellow tribesman of Imam Obama. As long as Iran feels he is worth propping up, the Imam will never make serious moves to effect his removal.

3. Those trying to overthrow Assad should probably realize that when you decide to kill someone, he is mighty liable to shoot back.

Consider that we supported the Afghans against the Soviets and the thanks was Al-Queada and Bin Laden.

Assad makes chemical weapons, not oil. So I don't see how he serves our interests.
