A funny thing happened to Mitt Romney on the way to his coronation as the inevitable Republican candidate for president of the United States. Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado happened.
Rick Santorum beat him in all three states on the same day — and beat him by huge margins in two of those states, as well as upsetting him in Colorado, where the Mormon vote was expected to give Romney a victory.
The Republican establishment, which has lined up heavily behind Romney, has tried to depict him as the "electable," if not invincible, candidate this November.
But it is hard to maintain an aura of invincibility after you have been vinced, especially in a month when pundits had suggested that Romney might build up an unstoppable momentum of victories.
In a sense, this year's campaign for the Republican nomination is reminiscent of what happened back in 1940, when the big-name favorites — Sens. Taft and Vandenberg, back then — were eclipsed by a lesser-known candidate who seemed to come out of nowhere.
As the GOP convention that year struggled to try to come up with a majority vote for someone, a chant began in the hall and built to a crescendo: "We want Willkie! We want Willkie!"
If there is a message in the rise and fall of so many conservative Republican candidates during this year's primary season, it seems to be today's Republican voters saying, "We don't want Romney! We don't want Romney!"
Even in Colorado, where Gov. Romney came closest to winning, the combined votes for Sen. Santorum and Speaker Gingrich added up to an absolute majority against him.

As a long-time resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I can say with utter conviction that Mitt Romney made an utter pig’s breakfast of the political situation here.
His “wonderful” healthcare reform has been a disaster, with cost overruns going ballistic, and actually making it MORE difficult for some to obtain health insurance.
Meanwhile, doctors are quitting their practice of medecine, taking early retirement, or simply refusing to accept any new patients.
His wishy-wishy stand on the Second Amendment did nothing to alleviate longstanding FFL inequities in the commonwealth, as well as related blatant and bare-faced abuses of power by two of the State’s Attorneys General.
To top it all off, as soon as he’d done the damage, he bailed out to “go national.”
Personally I wouldn’t vote for Mitt Romney for Toilet Attendant, but... Lord Help Us... even HE is better than the Marxist Obama, even if only marginally.
Let’s hope there’s someone - anyone - else on the Republican ticket, but... if he somehow gets the party nod, let’s hope he defeats Obama.
And, yes, saying so is indicative of just how low we’ve sunk as a nation.

If Romeny had even distanced himself from Romneycare I might have reluctlently accepted him. But he is actually PROUD of it. He defends it. He LOVES it.
By doing this he SCREAMS I AM A LIBERAL! And I don’t CARE what you think about me, just vote for me and shut up.
Yep! That does not keep the GOP pundits from praising the wonderful attributes of Romney though - does it?
Makes me wonder just why we even have elections anymore. It seems that the party machines actually control the outcome anyway. We sheeple just seem to keep going along for the ride.

Everyone I know prefers Santorum, but they are afraid of wasting a vote. Somehow the message got out that Romney and Gingrich are the only ones who stand a chance.

I fear they may be right. There are more grasshoppers than ants, and the ants are starting to leave.
Look around you. How many people really want the government to be smaller? How many GOP candidates?
When ever something happens, the first scream is to the State to help. Natural disasters, bad business, storms, etc. Few want to help themselves, most want a hand out.
Boards like FR can change that. I remember when everyone felt the same way about Cain but after the boards spoke out about voting your conscience.
It seems like Santorum has less baggage than the other two.
While I don’t agree with all Santorum’s positions, I could
vote for him. Of course, there’s a long way to go (1,000 delegates) It may be a brokered convention yet.
He's more likely to get a stake nailed through his black heart , or at least locked out of his vampire lair past sunrise.
May this be the last election cycle he pollutes.

You can’t waste a vote in the Primary - now in the actual Presidential election, another matter, but any vote against Obama is NOT wasted!
At the very least, Santorum, walked back a lot of his votes and offered explanations for them. He has articulated how fed up with big government we are, and he said “I get it.”
I like Gingrich’s bold plans, but if he doesn’t get anywhere I would vote for Santorum because I think free market conservatives would at least have a fighting chance at persuasion, whereas for Romney I don’t really think so.
If the “establishment” wanted a moderate, there are quite a few to choose from that don’t have Romney’s liberal governing baggage, the kind of baggage that will make a huge difference in the lives of everyone for years to come. And it irritates me to no end that they picked this guy, the grandmaster of forced healthcare, who resorts to the language of class warfare from the left when cornered by the press, with nary a clue as to how angry we are, not just about ObamneyCare, but about all the epic fail central planning, the spending and governing like the guy on the street just doesn’t matter. It’s got to stop. I am so irritated about this that the race, for me at least, has become more about defeating that whole mindset and showing them who is in charge.
I am, therefore, reveling in Romney’s astounding defeat last night. I hope to see the RINO establishment running from this guy as fast as they can. If they have to get someone else, someone who we can at least feel comfortable with, and take care of the problem at the convention, then I’ll be just fine with that. As long as it isn’t Romney.
All he woulda had to do was say HE MADE A MISTAKE by implementing Obamacare in Mass.
But his ego won’t allow him to do that.
GOP Voters Are SCREAMING ‘We Don’t Want Romney!’
Well, I don’t mean that’s ALL Mittens would have had to do.
But it woulda been better than his lies/rationalizations that have caused him to stay in the hole that he dug.
I’m okay with it cuz I want him to lose the nom.
