Hypothetically speaking, if it did go to an open convention would the choices still be basically between who is left, or could delegates vote for someone else that’s not currently in the race?

I have come to the conclusion that the only way to prevent Romney from getting the nomination is for both Newt and Rick to stay in the race till the convention. If its an open convention Mitt is toast.
It seems apparent to me that having both in the race taking away votes from Romney is the way to go. I think both Newt and Rick need to hunker down for the long haul.
The GOP elites are going to soon figure out their guy cant beat Newt and Rick if they are both in the race and they are going to be screaming for one or the other to drop out.

Looks like Santorum could take all 3 tonight. even with no delegates awarded, this is very big news.
43% reporting in Colorado, the AP says he has 42.1% with 28.2% for Romney and 16.4% for Newt
Missouri -99% reporting
Santorum 55.2%
Mittens around 25%
Minnesota (79% reporting)
Santorum - 44.9%
Paul - 27.3%
Mittens - 17%
Newt - 10%

As far as I’ve seen Kristol isn’t backing Romney. He’s pretty much said he wants a brokered convention and wants someone other than the current crop to be the nominee.

How did Mitt get the nickname Mittens? It sounds appropriately derogatory.

Ahhhhh 1940 and Wendell Wilkie. My grandfather was good friends with Mr. Wilkie. The 1940 convention was one for the ages. Talk about smoke filled back rooms.

Newt needs to do better than Rick. Otherwise, it is bad news. Rick is a socialist and a Karl Rove candidate just like Mittens. Sure he is pro-life, but so is Newt and Newt has a longer record of being pro-life than Rick who triangulated his position in 1990.

Hope it comes to that.
An open convention could be very exciting. Just hope a true conservative emerges when all is said and done.
Otherwise, what do we gain even if we do win?

There is no need for a brokered convention. It's time to get behind the only conservative who can win and that is Santorum. Newt's negative ratings are never going to be overcome. People won't vote for you if they don't like you. Newt loses 20% more women voters that the others. Conservatives need to unite to beat Mitt. Saying Rick can't win is wrong, 4 states to Newt's one. Saying he is Romney's “beard” is just stupid, look at what he just did to Mitt. His record is on the whole as or more conservative than Newt. If we are going to support a conservative it's time to be realistic and get on board or Romney will win the nomination and lose to Obama. Where Santorum wins, turnout is high, where Mitt wins, turnout is low.

If he is talking about an open or brokered convention it is a strong signal that he does not think he will win in the primaries.
