Gingrich Floats Possibility of ‘Open Convention’

Declaring that he is in the race for the long haul, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich floated the possibility Tuesday night that Republicans may have the first “open convention” since 1940.

“I’m certainly in it all the way to the convention. We’ll see what happens,” Gingrich told CNN. “At the rate we’re going, you could have the first open convention since 1940 which would give you something to cover that you would just love.”

In the 1940 Republican National Convention — the first televised contest — Wendell Willkie of Indiana was nominated for president on the sixth ballot in Philadelphia, according to various reference sources...

Gingrich predicted that Romney will not do as well as he did in 2008 in those states. Missouri has no delegates at stake in its primary.

“I think the big story coming out tonight is it’s very hard for the elite media to portray Gov. Romney as the inevitable nominee after tonight’s over...,”

Gingrich said that he has been focusing on winning the battleground state of Ohio during the March 6 Super Tuesday battle, when voters in 10 states head to the polls.

“We, I think, have a very real chance of winning Ohio so it’s very exciting to be here,” said Gingrich, who is also focusing on Arizona and Michigan on Feb. 28 and Tennessee and Georgia on Super Tuesday.

“I think we’re going to do very well on Super Tuesday. We’re going to compete very intensely in Arizona and Michigan,” he said, noting that he spoke with Texas Gov. Rick Perry earlier today.

“We have a very strong operation in Texas. We have a very strong operation in Georgia. Our goal is through Super Tuesday; we then go to Alabama and Mississippi and then we go to Texas... (snip)

Santorum is making this election about things we wont win on.
He needs to focus on the economy the budget and national defense.

Gov. Rick Perry is still the best person to become president of the United States. Furthermore, family and friends I know in Texas think he is great.

He will lose if he does that. He is a one-trick pony with a very poor record on the budget or national defense.

That Yes he did, and we got rain.
It was never billed as a political rally.
We prayed for rain to end the drought.

After the first round of voting, all delegates are "released" and can vote for whomever they want.

In 1880 the Republican Party had three candidates at the convention; Ulysses Grant, James Blaine, and John Sherman. The three were tied up until after the thirty-fifth ballot, when Blaine and Sherman threw their support behind James Garfield, an Ohio Senator. Garfield won on the next ballot and then proceeded to defeat Winfield Scott Hancock, the Democratic nominee, in the general election.

If there is a brokered convention, there is the possibility that we might end up with someone completely unexpected, like Sarah Palin, Rand Paul, or Allen West, as our nominee.

I don’t dislike Daniels, was once for him, but after finding out about his ancestry, I just wondered if he will be acceptable after vetting. We absolutely don’t need another muslim sympathizer..

I believe the delegates from some states are bound thru the second ballot. A few may be bound through three ballots.

Good for you. You insult Perry, but then you insult yourself by repeating lies about him. No “little girl” was forced to take Gardasil.

I also live in Texas and was born here.

You, sir, don’t represent us.

No we don’t need another muslim apologist- don’t really know enough about him to pass a judgement. Don’t reckon he’ll get drafted at a brokered convention, anyway- but hope he is really one of the good guys on our side. Indiana stands to rebound quicker from the economic situation is they pass right-to-work and attract business from the more solidly unionized neighbors to their north.

Gotta work in the am- take care FRiend.

There is no need for a brokered convention. It's time to get behind the only conservative who can win and that is Santorum. Newt's negative ratings are never going to be overcome. People won't vote for you if they don't like you. Newt loses 20% more women voters that the others. Conservatives need to unite to beat Mitt. Saying Rick can't win is wrong, 4 states to Newt's one. Saying he is Romney's “beard” is just stupid, look at what he just did to Mitt. His record is on the whole as or more conservative than Newt. If we are going to support a conservative it's time to be realistic and get on board or Romney will win the nomination and lose to Obama. Where Santorum wins, turnout is high, where Mitt wins, turnout is low.

No Santorum is just fine. Wow! Tonight we saw a real leader. First guy to win 55 percent. His wins were decisive which is rare. He is now the FRONTRUNNER! Great job to the most moral, principled, Christian man with character. It is totally impossible to get better than this. Life is good!!!!

Santorum 4 states
Romney 3 states
Gingrich 1 state
Paul 0 states

I don’t see the brokered convention happening. Santorum is being the turd in the punch bowl alongside Paul.

Paul has about half the delegates of Santorum. Santorum has under half the delegates of Newt. and Newt has a 3rd of what Romney has.

I hadn't heard that. Everything I've read has said that the delegates are "released" after the first vote.

But it would make sense in a way to keep them tied to their candidate for the first couple of rounds. Let's say that after the first round of votes, Candidate A is 100 votes ahead of Candidate B, but still 150 votes shy of securing the nomination because Candidate C controls those deciding delegates. It would make sense that they would give the candidates time to broker some sort of deal (like giving Candidate C the Vice Presidency in exchange for his delegates) instead of turning it into a massive free-for-all.

It could turn out to be a very interesting summer.

Santorum need to GTFO.

HAHAHAHA. I can’t wait for you to wake up in the morning. Oh you will be surprised. Remember that Christmas gift that you received and you had no idea about it and was SHOCKED when you opened it. That is your tomorrow morning! It is going to be a very depressing week or so for you!!!! I hope you stocked up on alcohol because you are going to need it. If I had your address, I would send you a sweater vest.

Darn. You are awake. My last post to you on another thread is pretty funny. Anyway who cares about delegates. Santorum has the mojo and will be the talk of the town for the next week or so. Money is already pouring in. He is in it to win it. Thank God he didn’t listen to the naysayers around here.

If he is talking about an open or brokered convention it is a strong signal that he does not think he will win in the primaries.
