A trio of leading US senators on Tuesday warned Egypt that the risk of a "disastrous" rupture in ties had "rarely been greater" amid an escalating row over the planned trial of US pro-democracy activists.
Republican senators John McCain and Kelly Ayotte, joined by independent Joe Lieberman, also warned that US congressional "support for Egypt -- including continued financial assistance -- is in jeopardy."
"The current crisis with the Egyptian government has escalated to such a level that it now threatens our long-standing partnership," the three senators wrote in a joint statement.
"There are committed opponents of the United States and the US-Egypt relationship within the government in Cairo who are exacerbating tensions and inflaming public opinion in order to advance a narrow political agenda."

The leadership in Egypt could not care less.
They wil just get their money indirectly through the Saudies.
Thanks ColdOne.
It wouldn’t be a shock to see the old USSR, er, the new Russia step in and try to align with Egypt and other Arab nations just as the USSR did. And, of course, Egypt was aligned with the USSR and armed by them up through the Yom Kippur war in 1973.
Does the occupant of the White House care either? Or is he, perhaps, pleased at the chaos and expansion the Islamists' states throughout the Middle East?
Egypt has 2 things going for it.
Tourism and U.S. aid.
But shi++ing in their nest is the last thing Islambeciles would do.
Why don’t you check up on the makeup of Egyptian armored divisions and how they’re equipped.
What was it called, Arab Spring?
Lord help us.
That long-standing partnership went out the window with Mubarak, and was sealed with the recent elections in Egypt. -Tom
Why don’t you post me a link?
And all the technology in the world can’t instill someone with the actual WILL to fight.
Another HOSTAGE CRISIS!
And that is what Mubarak produced,he couldn’t keep his people down permanently and he mostly kept order by rounding up his enemies and then letting the crazies who could be bought rave about the Zionists and the misguides West.
Much like the Shah’s socialist idiocies in Iran, the ending to this story wrote itself.
Never underestimate the power of gullibility.
The military in Egypt would rather rupture the ties with the USA and lose tourism and US aid than they would lose power. Look throughout the region. Pakistan declares solidarity with Iran against an Israeli attack. Kuwait elects an Islamist legislature. The Maldives overthrow an elected, moderate leader to resume ties with Somalia. And that’s all in the last week.
We are not being given the magnitude of the Islamist Winter nor are we being told the implications for America.
This approaches the comical.
Lived through this once. Don't want to again. Seriously.
Senator Lieberman’s presence may help in the US, but it will only re-enforce the animosity of the Islamists and Egyptian Military.
