I know everyone wants to make fun of electric cars but doesn’t everything have problems when they first start. I don’t remember the first airplane being able to go as far as they do today. The first car you had to use a hand crank and probably had to stop every 100 feet. They definitely weren’t able to travel for miles and miles like today. I am not sure I understand why FREEPERS are making fun of automobiles that may one day be a great thing. I bet the first computer was this big hunky thing that was only able to be turned on for five minutes and could not be held in your hand.

Do you realize they have been trying to build an electric car since the early 1900s and have always failed because the batteries cannot store energy as well as say... hydrocarbons?

I don't recall the Federal Govt' subsidizing the Wright Brothers and then turning around and giving massive tax credits to get people to buy one five minutes after the first Kitty Hawk flight. I also don't recall the Federal Govt' going around encouraging people with cash handouts to crush their older buck boards in order to artificially create demand for the plane either.

What makes you think that electric cars are a new idea?

It’s not the electric car, per se, that they are making fun of. It’s the government mandate trying to force consumers to buy a technology that isn’t ready to compete.

There is also enough fossil fuel on the earth, especially when you include methyl hydrates, to power the world for hundreds of years yet.

There may come the day when fossil fuel alternatives and electric cars are able to supplant oil and gas and coal.

It’s just not there yet and won’t be for at least 60 or 70 years.

They are using proven technologies that are more than 100 yrs. old.

Unfortunately, they have been proven to be inferior to gasoline, LNG and have not really been improved on to make any sense for long distance travel.

They are fine on a golf course but just a little to big for most fields .

The problem with electric cars is the energy capacity of the batteries. The Chevy Volt’s batteries weigh some 400 lbs and hold the energy equivalent of about one gallon of gas. You have to charge those batteries all night to get that meager amount of energy into them. Those numbers simply cannot work.

We would have to improve the energy to weight ratio of batteries many times over before electric cars made sense. There is nothing on the horizon that anyone is talking about that would be a game changer. For the moment, electric cars will only be purchased by wealthy greenies who want to show the world what good people they are.

Electric cars will NEVER compete economically with gasoline powered cars. In fact, we shouldn't even try to replace one with the other. Electric cars will never be able to overcome the limitations of the battery, and when you consider the entire picture (all the energy inputs required to move an electric car X amount of miles vs all the energy inputs required to move a gasoline powered car the same amount of miles) there really is no comparison.

Why can't people accept that gasoline is now and for the foreseeable future the most efficient form of transportation energy? And in fact, where 'green' is concerned, gas powered cars are FAR MORE GREEN and better for the environment than electric cars.

It’s just a matter of physics, and the storage capacity of energy. No batteries ever invented or contemplated pack as much energy potential in the same volume/weight as a gallon of gasoline. Sorry, but you can’t “wish” away that basic fact.

Sure, but we don't subsidize them with our tax dollars.

And yes, electric cars were being built even prior to 1900 [Google "electric cars 1900" and look at the hundreds of images] and up till at least World War I. They never gained popularity because -- are you ready for it -- the batteries couldn't provide enough range.

In the nineties, GM had an experimental electric car project which saw hundreds of them put on the streets. It was such a failure that GM took them all back and destroyed them.

I'm actually pretty interested in electric car development, I just don't want to invest in it by force and see the president jawboning companies to build them.

They were making electric cars 100 years ago. The reason they stopped was the same reason they are a sh#tty idea now. Batteries are inferior to internal combustion engines.

That is exactly what we are laughing about... this is year 2012... and we do not live in the world of the Jetsons. obamao and GM sold this pos as ready for prime time... they bump fenders and three weeks later they burn your house down. This is NOT a Car and Driver look at a beta test vehicle or a concept car... this is being sold as a replacement for the conventional automobile. They should have named it the Marx.

Great. Why don't you just mosey on down to your (Dear Leader's) Gov't Motors and buy one of those great "sleds" you are so defending and then get back to us in a year or so?

Lay off the Kool Aid as it is obviously addling your limited intellect.

PS: Are you really a Freeper and a Conservative???

You can’t be serious, and still claim to be a conservative.
