[Me: The title of the article says "hesitant," but the article says that 22% is a flat "no" in answer to the question ending with "would you vote for that person?"]
Though the vast majority of Americans say they would vote for their party's nominee for president in 2012 if that person happens to be a Mormon, 22% say they would not, a figure largely unchanged since 1967. [Me: Is less than 4 out of 5 really considered "vast?"]
The new Gallup poll, conducted June 9-12, finds nearly 20% of Republicans and independents saying they would not support a Mormon for president. That is slightly lower than the 27% of Democrats saying the same.
At 22%, Americans' resistance to electing a Mormon president, even one nominated by their own party, is exceeded only by their opposition to electing someone who is either gay or lesbian (32%) or an atheist (49%).
The stability in U.S. bias against voting for a Mormon presidential candidate contrasts markedly with steep declines in similar views toward several other groups over the past half-century, including blacks, women, Catholics, and Jews.
This may be less troubling for Romney in the GOP primaries, where the vote could be highly fractured anyway, than in the general election, where -- should he win the Republican nomination -- he would need nearly complete support from Republicans to be competitive with President Obama.

I believe it would be a good idea for Free Republic to find a site where they can start an online petition where people can sign up to say they will vote for neither Obama nor Romney if they are the candidates in November. This could be like the Virginia pledge to vote for the candidate you vote for in the primary, except it will be a pledge to vote for neither of those people. Whether you’re staying home, voting 3rd party, or voting write-in, the point would be you’re voting for anybody but Obamney. If the petition gets popular enough, it could get some media attention to this issue.
You are correct there is no difference between Romney and BHO.
I will not vote for another liberal - period.
Romney is a liberal I will not vote for him.
This is one of the most frustrating Primaries I’ve seen. Newt has got to get back up there or we are surely done. But then I think maybe God is really done with us and just going to let us reap now what’s been sowed for so long.
I believe you to be correct, on both counts.
Under no circumstances will I ever stand before my Maker and explain that because he was the lesser of two evils, I supported a baby-killing cultist who directly or through his organization proclaimed that: There are more gods than the one God revealed in the Bible. God is a glorified, perfected human being with a body of flesh and bone. God is polygamously married to dozens (at least) of wives, and spends eternity as a type of Celestial Stud engaged in endless copulation producing countless spirit babies. Jesus is the spirit brother of Lucifer.....That's beyond where I draw the line, myself. I could not and would not....ever wish to face my Maker and admit I KNOWINGLY voted for such a person to be the leader of MY country. BTTT
Hateful Bigot; that is NOT true!!
We vote for NON-mormons all the time!

Aw... cut 'em some slack.
AMERICA was ready to BELIEVE someone who PROMISED Hope and Change.
It hasn't been delivered.
Fool me once...
Well; since you put it THIS way....
I think you’ve condensed it pretty well.
I'd use the word INSANE!

A pretty little girl named Suzy was standing on the sidewalk in front of her home in Salt Lake City. Next to her was a basket containing a number of tiny creatures; in her hand was a sign announcing FREE KITTENS.
Suddenly a line of big black cars pulled up beside her. Out of the lead car stepped a tall, grinning man.
"Hi there little girl, I'm President Thomas Monson. What do you have in the basket?" he asked.
"Kittens," little Suzy said.
"How old are they?" asked Monson.
Suzy replied, "They're so young, their eyes aren't even open yet."
"And what kind of kittens are they?"
"Mormons," answered Suzy with a smile.
Thompson was delighted. As soon as he returned to his car, he called his PR chief and told him about the little girl and the kittens.
Recognizing the perfect photo op, the two men agreed that the president should return the next day; and in front of the assembled media, have the girl talk about her discerning kittens.
So the next day, Suzy was again standing on the sidewalk with her basket of "FREE KITTENS," when another motorcade pulled up, this time followed by vans from Deseret News, The Ensign magazine and KSL.
Cameras and audio equipment were quickly set up, then Thompson got out of his limo and walked over to little Suzy.
"Hello, again," he said, "I'd love it if you would tell all my friends out there what kind of kittens you're giving away."
"Yes sir," Suzy said. "They're Christians."
Taken by surprise, the Living Prophet® stammered, "But... but... yesterday, you told me they were MORMONS."
Little Suzy smiled and said, "I know. But today, they have their eyes open"
