For all the pomp and excess of Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show, it is likely to be a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. that is most remembered.
The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of Madonna's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin." At the end of her lines, M.I.A. appeared to sing "I don't give a (expletive)," although it was hard to hear clearly.
The incident was reminiscent of Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" eight years ago -- a surprise risque moment in front of tens of millions of unsuspecting viewers. The brief exposure of Jackson's nipple during the 2004 halftime show raised a storm of controversy and put CBS in hot water with the Federal Communications Commission.
The Super Bowl, shown on NBC this year, is routinely viewed by more than 100 million people, the biggest TV event of the year.
The screen briefly went blurred after M.I.A.'s gesture in what seemed like a late attempt to cut out the camera shot. The NFL, which produces the show, had no immediate comment.

I am sure the network wants the audience to come from the second half.
The NFL ladles out this slop for Americans once a year, but television channels do it every night of the week. No wonder we have such evil, sick, perverted predators in our neighborhoods. (Have you checked the sex offender list for your neighborhood lately?)
What do you expect?
Its the National FELON League.
Oh and the half time show started going down hill once it started being “sponsored”

Exactly. She was convulsing enough I didn't notice the finger.
Prior to tonight I'd never heard of M.I.A. and I strongly disbelieve her musical " accomplishments" will stand the test of time. She is just another symptom of our cultural degradation as evidenced by the ever coarsening of modern music and the destruction of the melody.
Well these trashy people are not performing for free. If the networks and the NFL really wanted this sort of thing to NOT happen they would lay the law down: ‘If you or any of your crew, do, say, imply, look, breath anything that looks obsene, there will be no paycheck.
End of story, end of problem.
I missed it. I watched the whole football game except for halftime. Had more important things to do.
NFL could have gotten a better act than Madonna ! Several years ago, there was a good act - The Who. Madonna is so lame !
I heard the expletive and saw a finger up, but it happened so fast I didn’t realize it was her middle finger. I knew something was off as the screen went blurry for a second, and then they cut back in.
All things considered, I prefer wardrobe malfunctions.
Is that a joke? The Who was easily the worst in the last 25 years. Madonna was the best since U2. Prince comes close.
Yes they’ve had a 5 second delay for such things ever since the wardrobe malfunction. They had to bleep some of the Rolling Stones lyrics one year.
We were watching this at the church with my church family. An audible sound went through the folks when this woman cursed like that.
Just horrid, the disrespect these entertainers have for the people.
That said, though, I think IF Madonna would have ended, "Like a Prayer" with a "Tebow"...it could have saved her performance for me; and she would have catapulted herself into relavancy.
Oh, and the cutesy "world peace" thang...would have been better served as, "PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH"
---just my very humble opinion on both of these ;-)
Yeah, football...
The next thing you know, coaches will be raping boys in the shower.
She has a really long middle finger.
