“The gunmen were apparently seeking a ransom.”

The kidnappers must not have wanted SEAL Team 6 to deliver the ransom.

Since I was a little girl, wandering through the Egyptian Galleries at The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, I have wanted to go to Egypt.

I have been cured of that desire.

They were American tourists with a tour in an area that has been Egypt’s biggest tourist destination for years, and they were returning from visiting a famous (Christian) monastery in the desert. They weren’t lefties out trying to bring a message of peace to the Muzzies or anything nutty.

A big part of this probably was an attempt by Islamists to disrupt the tourist industry, which is one of the few things that provide any income to Egypt nowadays.

I’ve been to the MFA’s Egytian collection a couple of times, but the Brooklyn Museum has one of the best Egyptology collections in the country, it was sort of their speciality. The Metropolitian Museum got a whole bunch of stuff on loan from the Egyptian Government and expanded into Central Park to exhibit it, though I’ve never been there.

I’ve long wanted to visit Egypt, but when the Muslim Brotherhood killed a bunch of Western tourists about 20 years ago, I scratched it off my bucket list.

“Duh.... Hey lets go vacay in Egypt... they just had a revolution prices will be low. No we don’t need to worry about Radical Muslims.... President Obama say they are our freinds....” I wonder how many lives these tourists are going to cost us.

Ah! great suggestion. I shall have to Visit Brooklyn some day. I am sure it is safer and even CLEANER than Egypt!

I have ridden the South Bronx Expressway at night, alone on a Harley. And I am willing to bet even THAT was safer than Egypt!

I have no desire to visit any muslim country. Which means I might have to move out of Broward County.

The Sinai has become notorious for the way local Bedouins prey on African migrants trying to reach Israel. Per several reports, the Bedouins do a nice business in organs removed from the slaughtered Africans. I imagine the Bedouins didn’t want to mess up their livelihood.

Ditto. Always wanted to scramble to the top of the Great Pyramid, climb inside to the sarcophagus; see the Cairo Museum, the Valley of the Kings, etc.

Now...

I think someone told them, “hey guys, did you see what Seal Team 6 just did to that other group of hostage takers.” They were subsequently released.

Doesn’t matter what political side they’re on. I was speaking to their common sense. Why anyone, especially women, would visit the ME in these times is taking too much a risk.

Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn is pretty much Lebanese. (The ones I knew were Catholic, like Doug Flutie and Danny Thomas.) The Brooklyn Museum is right in downtown Brooklyn, about mile from the Brooklyn Bridge, and nowhere nearly as bad as the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95). Near by is Grand Army Plaza, more than worth a visit. The Metropolitan Museum, 5th Avenue and 85th Street in Manhattan, has even better exhibits on semi-permanent loan from the Egyptian government. Might want to see them before they take them back.

Back before the Arab spring, I went to Cairo for 2 months on a business engagement. I got to see the Cairo museum, visit the Giza pyramids, The red and step pyramids, Imhotep’s museum and a number of other tourist attractions. I'm glad I went and saw it when I did. It was the trip of a lifetime.

However, not only would I NOT go now, I would have to advise against such a trip. Sad, but true.

Yes...it is sad.

Sharm El Sheik has lost its Charm.

And Egypt has lost its greatest treasure and source of livlihood...its heritage.
