House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) threatened Tuesday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress if the Justice Department did not provide certain documents in response to the committee’s subpoena.

In a letter to Holder, Issa wrote that “this committee will have no alternative but to move forward with proceedings to hold you in contempt of Congress” if Holder and the DOJ didn’t produce documents they demanded relating to the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal.

Holder has until Thursday, Feb. 9. to comply, according to Issa.

Oversight Democrats stress gunwalking's history

************************************************EXCERPT******************************************

By JOSH GERSTEIN |

1/31/12 12:43 AM EST

A new report from the Democratic staff of the main House committee investigating Operation Fast and Furious stresses that federal law enforcement officials in Arizona relied on the investigative tactic of gunwalking as far back as 2006 and used it in three other investigations before the one that made the technique infamous.

The minority report, "Fatally Flawed: Five Years on Gunwalking in Arizona," was released early Tuesday, two days before Attorney General Eric Holder is to testify before a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing into Fast and Furious, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives operation that allegedly permitted more than 1000 guns to flow from licensed dealers in the U.S. to Mexican drug cartels. Two of the weapons were found at the scene of the killing of a Border Patrol agent in Arizona in December 2010.

The timing of the Democratic staff report seemed aimed at taking the sting out of Thursday's hearing and muddling a more hostile narrative Committee Chairman Darrell Issa of California is likely to lay out.

In a letter accompanying the report, the panel's ranking Democrat, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, indicated that the committee's year-long probe had turned up no indication that Operation Fast and Furious was directed from Justice Department headquarters

"Contrary to repeated claims by some, the Committee has obtained no evidence that Operation Fast and Furious was a politically-motivated operation conceived and directed by high-level Obama Administration political appointees at the Department of Justice,” Cummings wrote.  “The documents obtained and interviews conducted by the Committee indicate that it was the latest in a series of reckless and fatally flawed operations run by ATF’s Phoenix Field Division during both the previous and current administrations.”

Cummings also complained that Republicansdid not seek testimony from some who had a hand in the Bush-era operations, such as former Attorney General Michael Mukasey. In addition, Cummings noted that Issa has declined to hold a public hearing with Ken Melson, the acting head of ATF from 2007 until he was reassigned in August amidst the Fast and Furious flap.

Among the minority report's findings:

The Democrats on the Oversight Committee have begun laying the groundwork for their strategy, and released a document Monday highlighting the fact that gun-walking had been used as far back as 2006, and was used in three previous investigations before Fast and Furious.

Mmm hmm. That won't fly. In F&F guns were intentionally allowed to "walk." In fact the terms "walk" and "walking" were coined by ATF agents for intentionally letting guns get out of their control as opposed to losing them due to bad circumstances. ATF field agents also testified under oath that they had never hear of letting guns "walk" before F&F. It's all right here...

The Department of Justice ’ s Operation Fast and Furious: Accounts of ATF Agents

Issa can produce numerous agents who can and will testify that "walking" guns never happened before 0bungles and WithHolder were in charge. Who or what can the Dems bring as evidence to the contrary? It's a bluff. A rather stupid bluff.

“I’m Attorney General Eric Holder”. I was Appointed by Barrack Obama. No Body can Screw with me. I sold weapons to the Mexican Drug Cartels trying to try to advance the anti-gun campaign here in the country I live in. Such may or may not become something I am worried about.

I did a little research on the powers Congress has as concerning Contempt citations. Short of impeaching the man -

I don’t think they have the power to enforce a contempt charge against the sitting Attorney General. Turns out that Congress has to rely on the Attorney General in most forms of Contempt to enforce it -when he is the target, they are SOL. This also gets real murky because of the natural power struggle between the Executive and Legislative branches.

The Democrats on the Oversight Committee have begun laying the groundwork for their strategy, ...

BTW, aren't Dem reps on the Oversight Committee supposed to be looking for the truth not devising strategies to help coverup or excuse it? If 0bama starts loading Indians up in trains and moving them to new reservations are they going to say "So what? Andy Jackson did it too?"

Any mention of the Florida gun walker controversy that mirrors Fast and Furious? I forget the name they gave it, but I remember there seems to be an all out, across the nation gun walking “game” going on to seize our civil rights.

I hope Issa can do more than just send “Airwick” Holder to bed without his supper.

JEEZE! What a snake pit Washington is.

This is mostly a waste of time. I’d take all the info collected and just hand it to the Mexican gov’t....allowing them to put charges together, and request all the players be brought to Mexico to face justice. At that point, the players will begin to run scared, and start talking a good bit. They all deserve twenty years in a Mexican prison for what they’ve done, as a minimum.

Holder is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee on Thursday, his sixth appearance before Congress regarding Fast and Furious in the past year.

Perfect day for it, Ground hog day. The ground hog Holder comes out of his bunker, sees his shadow, then starts spinning fast and furious, "no, no , that ain't my shadow, that ain't my shadow, " but no matter whichever way he twists, it sticks to him like glue. Then the big old Obama bus roars by and flattens him on the pavement, to put him out his misery. But the tracks ars mighty gory and they lead right back to the White House.
