Gingrich Maintaining Grip on New Lead [Gallup national daily tracking poll]

"Romney slumps to 24%, his lowest level since before Iowa caucuses"

PRINCETON, NJ -- Republican registered voters nationally continue to prefer Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, with no sign in Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 22-26 that Gingrich is giving back any of his recent gains.

The 32% of Republican voters now choosing Gingrich as the candidate they are most likely to support for the nomination is his highest level of support since the 2012 primary voting began in early January. The 24% supporting Romney is his lowest. Despite the heavy media focus on the two front-runners, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum are each holding their own at just under 15%, putting the two men in a statistical tie for third.

Bottom Line

As the Jan. 31 Florida primary nears, Gingrich remains at the top of the GOP field in national Republican preferences for the nomination, and his eight-percentage-point lead over Romney, in second place, is his widest since mid-December.

Gingrich's latest eclipsing of Romney occurred in Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 19-23. That interviewing period spanned the South Carolina debate, as well as the South Carolina primary, which Gingrich handily won. Since then, Gingrich has not only maintained the lead but expanded it slightly, indicating that Romney's sharpened rhetoric, combined with various attacks on Gingrich by such major Republican Party figures as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Bob Dole, hasn't been particularly harmful.

Romney ads are still going on today about Gingrich being GUILTY, fined & kicked out of his speakership in disgrace.

The ad was just on TV again & I've been getting calls about it from his campaign - got one again last night.

It’s starting to move against Newt in Florida...the GOP establishment and, naturally, the media are slamming him hard.

His last hope was to pull out another top notch debate victory...but, for some reason he lost his edge.

Romney the RINO is now the likely choice next summer at the convention.

Bring on the third party.

****Romney hired a debate coach. It is Bachmann’s former coach.****

Indeed. A slash and burner!!! Didn’t turn out too well for M.Bachmann - let’s hope he has the same luck with Romney.

That type of vindictive personal confrontation is just not Presidential - or manly - or persuasive....but it seems Romney found his true nasty self which he had previously been hiding behind the smarmy smile. This hateful persona is authentic - but the lies are still lies.

George Soros:
"Well, look, either you’ll have an extremist conservative, be it Gingrich or Santorum, in which case I think it will make a big difference which of the two comes in. If it’s between Obama and Romney, there isn’t all that much difference except for the crowd that they bring with them. And maybe better food. Probably better food on the Romney side."

GO NEWT!

Santorum canceled all his Florida events and went home. Unfortunately, he neglected to endorse Gingrich, because Santorum is still in the race. Apparently, stopping Romney is not all that important to him.

Why are there no new Florida polls?
In SC, they were updating the polls daily, esp after Newt’s great debate.

I do believe nationally the Romney Sleaze Machine is starting to be recognized for what it is. Typical leftist tactics.

You’re not on the ground in Florida. The Florida Republican Party gave 900 of the 1200 seats to the Romney campaign for last night’s debate which is why you might have thought Romney did better than he did: he had never before received so much applause and Newt so little. This is the same corrupt Florida Republican party that supported Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio.
