The Romney campaign sends along a statement by Bob Dole pasted below. Relations between Dole an establishment figure in the party and Gingrich were well known to be tense during the 1990s. Here it is:
I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.
Gingrich served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999 and had trouble within his own party. Already in 1997 a number of House members wanted to throw him out as Speaker. But he hung on until after the 1998 elections when the writing was on the wall. His mounting ethics problems caused him to resign in early 1999. I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations. In the end, he paid the fine with money from other sources.
Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with Bill Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.
In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty ice-bucket in his hand that was a symbol of some sort for him and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it.
In my opinion if we want to avoid an Obama landslide in November, Republicans should nominate Governor Romney as our standard bearer. He has the requisite experience in the public and private sectors. He would be a president we could have confidence in.
It looks like someone flipped a switch on a ‘firewall’ last night, drawing a line for the Florida primary.
You know the RINO Republican Socialist Party is pretty desperate to stop any Conservative from running the country when they bring in Bob “Let’s Make A Deal” Dole. Next thing you know they’ll bring in the other Pubbie loser, McLame.
They resurrected him special-like for this.
If I were Republican and Romney got the nomination, I’d probably stay home.
It’s obvious that the establishment likes the country as is and doesn’t want any changes.
A new order might have to be established.
This day will go down in history. I have never seen anything like it. WOW!
Bob who?
Another night of the long knives. It is despicable and completely calculated.
That may be true, personally I don't know why they didn't run a store manniquin instead of Dole - face it, his greatest shot of fame is appearing with Brittany Spears in a commercial for Viagra. But, there is this very uncomfortable fact:
Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself.
I wish Cain was still in the picture, or Sarah would throw a shoe in this race.
See my post above. Of course they want Obama to win!
“Tell me that there isnt a conspiracy afoot now by the GOP-E to force Romney down our throats...”
That is exactly what it is. As of today I have now come to the point that I will sit out voting for Romney if he is the nominee. I never thought I would ever say that but the last couple of days has changed my mind. The RINOs will never come out with the veracity against Obama. Just shameful.
Mr. Viagra lost to Bill Clinton.
“He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice”
Rarely took advice from the establishment! This is why they fear him, and it’s why we need him in the White House.
“Bob Dole is the poster boy on why we dont want Romney.”
Worth repeating. It is like being told that Gerald Ford has risen from the grave and endorsed Mitt...
Maybe he should wait for the Gingrich 3.1 patch to be released.
He's a spry 88. It would appear that Viagra has helped to extend his existence at least long enough to take a hard line against Mr. Gingrich.
Dole's statement would've been more effective -- by several magnitudes -- if he hadn't included that last paragraph shilling for Romney.
Dole must be as old and addled as Mickey Rooney!
Wow! They drug out the drool patrol against Gingrich McCain, and now Dole! Now those are sure two candidates that know how to win presidential elections! /sarcasm
Bob Dole required no help from anyone to lose his last election.
The GOP-E are scared sh!tless by the prospect of Newton getting the nomination. If he wins FL, heads will be exploding all over the place.
Pass the popcorn...
I thought Dole was dead!
No He takes Viagra!!!!
