Gingrich a star on Reagan team: Romney "work product" as conservative at issue. Mitt Romney has raised the issue of Newt Gingrich's "work product." Wow. Intended to prod the former Speaker on the issue of his work for Freddie Mac (Gingrich last night released his contract with Freddie), the question, as seems to be a Romney characteristic, has clumsily backfired. It raises an all-too obvious question that is becoming increasingly revealing.
What is Mitt Romney's "work product" for the conservative cause?
The closest Mitt Romney ever got to the Reagan Revolution is apparently because he reads about it 30 years later. And he isn't even reading everything he should. This is the man, remember, who proudly professed when running against Ted Kennedy in 1994: "I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush"
A peculiar stance considering Reagan carried Massachusetts twice in his two presidential landslides. Romney now assures that Newt Gingrich -- who actually had a serious and considerably well-known role working with Reagan -- had little role in it. (By the way, Reagan won over 1, 310, 936 votes and over 51 percent in Massachusetts in his 1984 re-election race, while Romney won his solitary gubernatorial victory in 2002 with 1,091,988 votes and 49.77 percent. Which is to say, Reagan outpolled Romney by over 200,000. In 1980, third party candidate John Anderson drew off 15 percent of Reagan's vote, otherwise, one suspects, Reagan would have trumped Romney then as well.) Why? Why is Romney going after Gingrich on his supposed lack of Reagan ties?

Still, he did it once and he has it in him to revert back to his former self. If he continues to perform as he has in the last 10 days or so, he will be unstoppable.
“I would be on the Newt Gingrich bandwagon in a heartbeat if I thought we were getting the 1980’s to mid 1990’s version”
You will be getting the 2012 version which is about 16 years older and wiser. Everyone mellows with time. I think Newt wants to leave a legacy as a president who restored the constitutional republic. I believe he will do the things he is saying he will do if elected.
One thing for sure, if Newt has the best interest of the country and the people at heart and truly wants to turn this country around and make it what it is supposed to be, he stands the chance of becoming one of the most important Presidents of the century. That is saying a lot in these times. We already know that Obama is the worst President, now we need the best. I think Newt can do it and that surely scares the hell out of the Congress. We need to take the House and the Senate to back Newt up also. Then people need to take their states back.
WOW!!! Thanks for posting this ..... read every word & I’m passing it on to folks that should also read it. Newt, personal foibles & all, has what it takes to be President, a conservative President.
You are welcome. And thank you for passing it on. We have to try to clear his resume as much as we can.
Unfortunately, the vast majority will only remember Romney's quip about Gingrich appearing only once in Reagan's book and then only as a backbencher with whom he disagreed. Such is the power of the media.
For all of Newt's purported debating skills, he, not Romney, appears to have the glass jaw. Romney has learned how to get under Newt's thin skin through sudden, multi-pronged attacks. Newt normally has the presence of mind to dissect that and respond, but my sense is that he becomes emotionally wounded and then defensive. He then retreats to saying fallback things like "I will respond later on my website". Newt needs to get in a room for a day with debate coaches to get this corrected. It's not hard, but it must be done now. I saw ample evidence last night that Romney has been getting intensive debate coaching. Romney has become an extremely dangerous debater.
Newt must prevent Romney from standing next to him on national television and rewriting history to Newt's detriment.
“Romney has become an extremely dangerous debater.”
Only because it is not beneath him to lie. Romney is NOT a good debater...he has preplanned lies to tell. I don’t think he scored points over what he did to Newt. However, we will see how the polls change or don’t over the next few days.
Speaking of a disgrace, If you are referring the so-called "ethics" investigations then you are coming at Newt from the left.
The "ethics" investigations were a disgrace. They found nothing.
Nice use of leftist talking points.

How many times does it take for you to read the truth before it sinks in?
That's because apparently, Romeny graduated from the Marsha Coakley Campaigning School.
Several links posted here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2837590/posts give a good recap of Gingrich’s troubles in the 1990s.
Instructive, and considering that we’re going to be hearing about it for months, something we all should read and know.
Gingrich is a flawed man, for sure. However, there was scant evidence of ethics violations when he resigned, and he was later exonerated.
I’m convinced that the reason he went willingly rather than resign is because he was 5 years into his clandestine affair with Callista and the “family values” candidate was going to be exposed for the hypocrite that he was.
The point is that his political disgrace doesn’t seem so disgraceful in hindsight. It remains to be seen how long he can tolerate the plastic Callista and keep his personal life in order.
This is a must read article for a Gingrich supporter.
Seriously.
This is a must read.
This historically documented article by Jeffrey Lord, a former Reagan White House political director, shatters into a thousand tiny pieces the Romney lie that Newt was a backbencher in the Reagan Revolution.
It’s one of the best primers I’ve seen to pass along to those who never really knew much about Congressman Gingrich, those too young to know, those too old to remember, and those who simply weren’t paying attention to politics at the time.
Romney has learned how to get under Newt’s thin skin through sudden, multi-pronged attacks
I think it had more to do with the debate format ala Brian Williams. Who I believe intentionally let the debate get away from him.
It felt to me like Romney overwhelmed Gingrich with multiple questions. I’m not sure how Gingrich could have answered Romney’s charges satifactorily because romney was all over the board.
Except may he could have said Romney is all over the board?
“Reagan put his arm around the young Georgia Congressman and said in his typically gentle fashion, “Well, some things you’re just going to have to do after I’m gone.”
THIS article is full of history, truth and the spirit of REAGAN all over it.
GO NEWT! (Please Lord, guide his steps!)
