Giffords to step down from Congress

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week to focus on her recovery, her staff announced Sunday. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video message. Giffords, a third-generation Arizonan who served five years in the state Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006, will not seek re-election this fall. Giffords vowed to return public service. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.

She had to step down...she was incapable of campaigning or even appearing on TV. Good luck to her But Dems should stop lying that some right wing guy shot her. It was one of their own

It was the honorable thing to do. She may have been able to win re-election, but there is no way she could adequately represent her constituents.

Giffords AZ District 8 has been without representation for over a year. I congratulate Gabby Giffords on reaching this decision. Will her astronaut husband run in her place?

Best wishes for her continued recovery.

Hopefully she and her husband will have a long and joyful retirement.

That is how the Democrats play the game. I saw how it is done twice—first during the illegal alien amnesty vote and then during the Obamacare vote. The Dems defuse public outrage against unpopular votes by getting enough *moderate* Republicans to vote with them, thus allowing them to hide behind the cover of it having been a *bipartisan* vote so that the voters cannot vent their fury on the Democrats alone. The Dems keep the *blue dogs* in reserve and do not like to use them on controversial votes. During the Obamacare votes, the Republicans hung together, denying the Dems enough votes to pass the bill, so they had to let the *blue dogs* come out from behind cover and reveal their true Democrats first loyalty. This flushed out the double dealing *blue dogs* who finally had to vote with the liberals but not before extracting a lot of money from the Dem leaders for betraying their *deeply held* prolife beliefs.

Yes, she may have timed her announcement after she became vested, but in this case I wouldn't hold it against her. She was not ousted because of some scandal, she took a bullet to her head while performing her duties for her district. She has a long and expensive recovery ahead of her, and I won't begrudge her and her family trying to secure a plan for her now.

She did the right thing in retiring for herself and her district, and good wishes to her.

Spoken like a good little sheep. Tell me... what would you think about a military member with combat-related brain damage hanging out for five years on active duty unable to do his job just to get his full retirement? It makes much more sense to medically retire this person and take care of his combat-related injuries.

It says a lot about our society when we won't begrudge a legislator taking advantage of the system to get us to pay them an income for the rest of their lives but we would prosecute your average soldier who showed such hubris.

This is the right thing to do, and should have been done months ago. I wish her well. Politics is not everything. Before we are Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, left, right, we are, above all, human beings.

How sad that a sick deranged left wing nut can end the career of one of the dwindling number of moderate democrats.

Why do we care about retaining moderate Democrats when so many of us on the Right are doing everything possible to push moderate Republicans away?

She was the target of an assassination attempt while performing her official duties. I don’t begrudge her being given a pension any more than I do a veteran who is wounded in the line of duty.

Why don't you review how these two examples are different before you vent your spleen on me. There are mechanisms in place to take care of those injured in the line of duty. She went beyond that to ensure she got an undeserved pension too.

Shame on you for being so willing to fall for the elite talking points.

Isn’t this what Kristen Hilderbrand (?) the *conservative* Democrat from Upstate New York did? She was all for gun rights and was pro-life while she was in New York but then reversed her opinions when she moved to Washington.

Actually, this is exactly what I expect from our Congressional grifters. I feel for her condition and wish her the best in her recovery, however, let's not pretend that the timing of this retirement is anything but having waited for Congressional pension vesting (it takes five years and she began serving Jan 2007).

"Even as a dyed-in-the-wool conservative she’d have my vote....".

Then you are part of this nation's problems. What shallow thinking.

I would be upset with a military person if they acted like they could do full combat duty when they couldn’t. But, if they had a desk job instead, I wouldn’t really care. They deserve it without having to leave early.

Same here. I am sure she did what she could for her district even without being there.

Well, this puts to rest those absolutely idiotic “rumblings” that she was going to run for Jon Kyl’s seat.

I wish her the best. This step should have been taken months ago, in the interest of not only her but also the people of her district.

She was being used by her Democrat “friends”, in my opinion, as a prop.
