U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week to focus on her recovery, her staff announced Sunday. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video message. Giffords, a third-generation Arizonan who served five years in the state Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006, will not seek re-election this fall. Giffords vowed to return public service. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.

Right you are, on wishing the lady the best and this being past due.
Am wondering if the timing could have anything to do with the Congress retirement benefits program and being in office for the length of time necessary to qualify to “retire”.
I wish her well. But as for those who made use of her for political purposes, I have little sympathy.
I imagine we’ll see more of that. She was a relatively conservative Democrat, and the district might well go Republican, so I expect the dirty tricksters will pull out all the stops again, blaming her shooting on Sarah Palin and the Christian Conservatives, who had her in their crosshairs.
Playing for the sympathy vote. I hope whoever runs for that district points out that the killer was a crazy, potheaded leftist, who was given a gun permit despite run-ins with the law because his mother was a high-up Democrat player.
At least SHE cares enough about this Country to know when to step aside ... there are about 400 other Congress members who should do the same ... on both sides of the aisle.
We have to stop paying their salaries ... the original intent was not to make SERVING in Congress a life-long profession.
My gggggreatuncle had to pay his own way when he served in the House representing Virginia and later, Kentucky. Let the States that elect them support them ... with NO contributions from lobbyists or businesses, people, nations. Their pay should come from the people who elected them not from outside their district or State.
Best wishes for her continuing recovery. She is very courageous and made the right decision. Her constituents have been without effective representation for over a year now.
This may be a GOP pick up as Jesse Kelly, who lost to Giffords by a small margin in 2010, has declared again.
While I didn’t like Ms. Giffords’ voting record, I never disliked her personally and I’m sure that we all wish her a full recovery and a happy future.
You obviously don't live in Tucson... Gabby "played" a Blue Dog while in Arizona, but she voted Liberal in DC. She did as told by Nancy Pelosi.
>>At least SHE cares enough about this Country to know when to step aside
Ted Kennedy did not. He held onto his U.S. Senate seat till his last breath, then a temp. replacement (Kirk) was named
until the election was held. Ted’s health resulted in him missing a lot of votes and he COULD have stepped aside...
I agree and I pray for her continued recovery.
God speed to this lady!
Isn't that illegal?
That won't happen. He is very happy living in Texas and so is she. I'm not sure what kind of person she was before but according to people that I know that have run in to her in Nassau Bay she is very sweet. My sis saw her a few days ago out eating and she said that Giffords really looks great and appears to be doing well for someone who has had a TBI.
I've been involved in supporting veterans with TBI for many years. TBI is a very tough thing not only the person who has been injured but also their family. It is good that she is leaving Congress to focus on her injury. Good for her family too because it takes the pressure of politics out things.
Giffords is a sweetie and I wish her all the best.
She began "serving" in Congress in January, 2007. She just retired. Why the long wait when it was clear she couldn't fulfill her duties long ago?
Members who participated in the congressional pension system are vested after five (5) years of service.
I won't be so nice about her departure... good riddance, you self-serving grifter. Sadly, you clearly belonged in Congress... your kind of people.
I wish Ms Giffords a full recovery and God’s graces.
Her husband and closest friends (Pelosi, Debbie wash your hair), however, are dog dirt. On a good day.
When I lived in Tucson, Morris Udall did the same thing for years.
As the mother of a closed-head injured daughter, I can attest to the fact that Rep. Giffords has a very long recovery ahead of her. Her age and the nature of the injury are working against her. Stress, particularly the kind of stress encountered as a U.S. Congressman would probably cause her to regress. Her ability to reason has to be greatly effected by this TBI. She said something publicaly this summer that showed she was not grasping the situation at hand. I wish I could remember it. But I immediately thought, that was the response of a Traumatic Brain Injured person. Sad. I wish her well and a full recovery. She made the right decision.
Research ‘Rio Nuevo, a special tax district the funds from which went to support downtown redevelopment which led to the loss of two-hundred thirty million dollars as a result of studies and mismanagement. All controlled by the left.
Research Umberto Lopez, owner of the Arizona Hotel, who is pursuing a tax break to remodel his hotel for occupancy after allowing it to fall into disrepair. Currently the city council is considering charging a fee to alarm owners to cover the response of law enforcement, whether or not they respond, which I have vowed in writing not to pay, to alarm activations. Recall also that southern Arizona nuts are considering breaking away from northern Arizona and forming their own state/country. Fanciful I know but illustrates the leftist thinking here.
There is much, much more. Choose your move to Arizona wisely. Still, we could use solid conservatives here.
Waiting for Sen. Tim Johnson D-SD to show the same concern for his constituents and resign.
I feel horrible for ANYONE who has taken a shot to the head and survived to tell about it.
However; a demonRAT, who steps down is a plus for America.
Coldhearted? Yes. But I care more for our country then some lame a$$ demonRAT......who, by the way, was shot by one OF HER OWN.
