Bingo. Nice to see some folks have it right. Reagan thought he HAD to have Bush as VP to get the election - but it turned out he didn't I don't think.

If Gingrich is anywhere nearly as successful as Reagan he'll need to have a true conservative in at VP...but also someone who isn't unduly abrasive but can bring others in...like Reagan himself was.

That's a tall order - getting close to Reagan's success. Reagan was the man for the time. Reagan handled power well because he didn't really care for it. Power was only a means to an end for Reagan. Reagan's end was, in a sense, an end of power, a reduction of government power including his own. Reagan didn't seek office - the office sought him. And as the plaque on his desk said, he was able to so much because it didn't matter to him who got the credit.

This may be the most substantive difference between Reagan and Gingrich. I think Gingrich wants the power and (maybe) the glory and (I think) the credit. Yes, I hope he wins the nomination and the election, but I worry about him once he's in power. I think real success tends to flee from us when our success becomes the most important thing to us.

An insightful post. If Gingrich defeats Romney, and then Obama, his last, most crucial opponent may be Gingrich.

Right. I can't say I'm not concerned because I am. But hey, right now, Gingrich seems the best of the bunch and you run with what you've got and hope for the best.
