What is it about this primary season that causes Republicans to go around the bend? The current beneficiary of the “anyone but Romney” mania is Newt Gingrich, who may actually win the South Carolina primary tomorrow. I find that astonishing. Gingrich has been mostly out of the public view since he retired from Congress 13 years ago. The most surprising feature of this endlessly surprising political year is that, at age 68, Gingrich has made a comeback.
It is hard to make clear-cut statements about the mercurial and often contradictory Gingrich, but one thing we can say with absolute certainty: he will never be President of the United States. Put aside the fact that he lasted only four years as Speaker of the House before resigning in disgrace, leaving Congress with an approval rating around 15%. Forget that he was the father of the earmark. Never mind his notorious lack of self-control and his attacks on free enterprise. Those are all worthy topics for another day, but for the moment let’s just focus on the allegations by Newt’s second ex-wife that hit the press this week. Apart from all the other good reasons why Gingrich will never be President, Marianne Gingrich’s sensational allegations snuffed out any possible hope that Newt can beat Barack Obama in 2012.

One more thing: the vitriol against Mitt isn't because he's a Mormon -- for the most part, anyway. I'll grant that there are some Mormon haters here.
The vitriol is because he has at times aggressively taken the wrong stance on important social issues such as abortion and anal-sex marriage, and because he pioneered ObamaCare.

You feel that it’s starting to slip for Romney. The MSM overplayed its hand. Perry is out, Bachmann is out, Santorum looks small and the fear for Mitt is that the conservative base will rally to Newt. This might be a case where Mitt’s money, MSM friends, and support base won’t be enough to push him through. He just can’t seem to get above his 25% base.
I can’t wait to see Palin’s closing speech at CPAC 2012. All eyes will be on her. I don’t think she’s running but endorsing. Hmmmmmm...wonder who?

Really. I was getting completely beat up by newtbots here on FR yesterday. The guy cannot keep his hands off women and then acts nefariously to boot.
He is a sick narcissist that actually believes what he wants personally matters and that he can do whatever he wants to get it. His character is deeply flawed and is a liar and a sneak and takes advantage of those who love him and takes advantage of his political position. I make this comment based on factual information in the public domain.
Now, if I had been on his team, I would have advised him to say this: “I made a lot of mistakes and deeply hurt Marianne. I wish I had done better and have deliberately walked the straight and narrow path since my conversion to Catholicism. I offer my sincerest apologies to those I have hurt and will do whatever I can do to make it up to them.”
That is what people want to hear, not “she’s a liar”. He is such a loser.
Nicely stated Frank... and I agree about the attacks and tactics.. There was a candidate, that under normal circumstances I may have supported... except for his cheerleaders drove me to despise him more than the other candidates (with exception to RuPaul and Mittens)..

Seems like a pretty miserable field of candidates who are good at dividing just when we need someone to unite the country against Obama.
Well, somewhere there was a comparison of economic plans, and for that reason, I lean towards Newt, I did vote Romney 2008 for same reason of best economic plan and I’m surprised he hasn’t improved on it.
