(Reuters) - France threatened on Friday to pull out early from the NATO-led war in Afghanistan after a rogue Afghan soldier opened fire on French soldiers, killing four and wounding about 15 others.

The killings in the Taghab valley of Afghanistan's eastern Kapisa province were the latest in a series of incidents in which Afghan troops have turned on Western allies.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said all French operations on the ground were being suspended and his defence minister was dispatched to Afghanistan to clarify the situation.

"If the security conditions are not clearly established then the question of an early return of French forces from Afghanistan will arise," said Sarkozy.

France has almost 4,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of the 130,000-strong NATO-led force there. French troops mainly patrol Kapisa, a mountainous province near Kabul. They are due to leave by around the end of 2013.

NATO said four soldiers were killed. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told a news conference about 15 others were wounded, eight of them seriously.

Were Saracens flying planes into buildings in America in 1917? We paid rivers of blood for France’s freedom, TWICE!! They can tough it out.

There is no reason for either us or the French to still be in that nation.

I would have to agree but to hear the French crying about 78 combat deaths is a little...unmanly.

I believe the complaint is more about how these last were killed, by an Afghan inside the unit.

I bet our SEAL team was set up as well.

Can't trust these people, we need to go.

Unfortunately, too often the idea of a ‘good French offense’ was “let’s charge the German machine guns until we’re all dead”

I was all for ending Afganistan as a terrorist truck-stop. But trying to turn 7th. barbarians into schoolboys isn’t going to work. However in the broader sense what we are fighting here is Islam. Not ‘’radical Islam’’, there is no such thing. It’s all radical. It’s a murderous throwback to a long distant and dark time in human history totally out of place in the modern world and we’ll be it fighting forever.

The assholes who post comments like the ones above have clearly never served yet beat their chest in arrogance when talking about the strength of our nation while having contributed 0 to it. They’re trash, no need to bother with them.
